Skydivingmovies ftp?

Recommended Posts

Yep. crashed 10 days after I left it. Thats a new record (last time it crashed after 4 days), but I think I'll install windows XP and see if i can get it a little more reliable.
My roommate will get back on the 18th and I could have him restart it. The problem then becomes that he would have full access to my computer, and well, I dont trust him. I caught him (through a log file) sending himself private files from my computer once. Anyway, if I don't have him restart it, I'll be back to do it myself on the 26th.
Anyone tried XP? opinions?

Don't do it. If you want reliability install either FreeBSD or a Linux distro. Out of the few servers I was the Admin for when I worked for an ISP, the ones that were the most reliable were my Linux boxes. I had uptimes over 6-months where my Windows based servers lasted a week at the most. Although those *were* NT 4 boxes, they had the latest server packs, etc running and were supposed to be reliable. Usually services would crack under pressure and crash the machine. At one point I actually had a schedule for reboots for the servers just to try to avoid that. I would bring the Primary domain controllers down, letting the secondary run while the primaries were rebooting and bring the primaries back online to prevent service downtime for our customers...but that's neither here or there. :)Bottom line, use Linux! It will be the most reliable/most secure (if you do it right) server you'll ever run.

You're running 98 as a server? No wonder...If you really want to run a web/ftp server, just put together a low end box, like an old P2-400 or something, throw some RAM in it, some HDs and use Linux. Linux will use those resources much better then any MS based machine and it will seperate your play computer from the server. Games and normal computer usage is usually very hard on machines trying to act as servers. Well, that's just my $0.02, though. :)Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom.-General George Patton-

Run XP or 2000. I've had uptimes currently of 14 days with my 2000 box and the only reason its thats short is I turned the box off when I left for FL. MY XP has gone for 60 days with out needing cycled. I turn the computers off when I'm going to be gone for more then 3 days due to the fact that I don't fully trust the person watching my place when I'm gone.

I agree with Dave on separating the functions of the computer. Having one as a server and one for playing/working will make a huge difference. As for the Linux, whatever. If you configure it right and know what you are doing, WinNT and Win2k provide very reliable server environments. The trick is to set them up right, and then don't friggin' mess with them. There is nothing wrong with Linux, if you know a lot about it. But it isn't great for most Windows people because you need to learn a whole new set of skills to configure it correctly. And a mis-configured Linux machine will leave you worse off than a mediocre Windows one. Just another $.02.

Well, I for one am going to disagree with most of what has been said. A) I have not heard good things about XP, if you want an M$ product go with 2K. 2K can run most games by now, you might lose a few frames per sec, but unless your machine is obsolete anyway, it should not hurt too much. XP driver support still really sucks. B) Hate to disagree with you dave, but I gotta. Unless you know how to admin a server and apply patches on a timely basis, linux is gonna leave you with just as many holes as windows. If you are gonna run linux you either need to be able to administer it or leave it unconnected. C) Of course if you did seperate your machine functions like Dave said then you could run linux and if anything on the server got wasted, oh well. But that does mean time to learn linux, two connections, etc.
My opinion run 2000, it is very capable for a small server and pretty easy to use.

HAHAHA! It's currently running on a p2-350, 192 megs of ram, total of 40 gigs of hard drive space, and win 98. Oh, here's the best part: it's a Gateway! And while it's busy sending out an average of about 15 gigs a week, it's also getting kick ass connection speeds in multiplayer games on the net, editing huge files in photoshop, and stuff like that. Any skydivers play half-life team fortress?
And while we're on the subject of UPGRADING my computer to become a low end machine, who wants to donate to the "buy dave a new motherboard" fund? :)But seriously, my out of date computer does a pretty damn good job for what I'm using it for. It's getting a bit slow nowadays and is just begging me to format the hard drive and start over, but I'd just lose too much software that i dont have the disks or insallation files to. Maybe some day (after backing up 8 or so gigs of skydiving videos of course).
