LawnDart21 0 #1 January 14, 2002 Okay, so maybe it's because I live in Boston and it's freezing right now and we can't jump year round, and etc, etc, etc, but I have been thinking alot recently about quitting my job and cutting away and becoming a full time skydiver. If I did. I would get my tandem rating first (planning on getting it in May), and then cutting away the job and spending all my time jumping. Any thoughts? Anyone that has done this and regrets it or encourages it? Any info would be mucho appreciated. Blue Skies, Tom
MarkM 0 #2 January 14, 2002 Learn to like ramen noodles.Instead of fully cutting away why don't you do what I did? Move down to FL and get a job there.Or you can go to CA or TX, AZ wouldn't be too bad either.
base698 20 #3 January 14, 2002 I've been examining the feasibility of doing that. You must really really like tandems to do it--you are going to be stuck doing just that EVERY load with little time for fun jumping. Some people enjoy that though. My current plan of attack seems to be to amass enough money to do some sort of coaching/organizing. That seems to be the best and most fun thing to do. Who knows though?
PhreeZone 20 #4 January 14, 2002 How are you getting around the 36 months in the sport requirement for the tandem rating?I want to touch the sky, I want to fly so high ~ Sonique
skybytch 273 #5 January 14, 2002 If you're serious and you like to eat when the weather is bad, get an AFF rating and a rigger's ticket too. Might want to get real good at flying video also. The more you can do, the more likely you are to be able to support yourself (ie live in a house not a tent!).pull and flare,lisa--

LawnDart21 0 #7 January 14, 2002 I did a tandem in May of 1999, that would be the start of my three years in the sport. May 2002 is my 3 yr anniversary.Blue Skies, Tom

airborne31582 0 #10 January 15, 2002 Ok, maybe I am just a newbie at this sport (only 13 jumps) but do people actually cutaway? I just thought it was a term invented for that skydiving movie with the bastard child of the Baldwin brothers.
skybytch 273 #11 January 15, 2002 Quotedo people actually cutaway? Yup! And imho it's totally worth it! Might not make as much money as in the corporate world, but those who've done it sure do enjoy life!pull and flare,lisa--

At 13 jumps you should already know that people cut away and why and when. If you don't, you should probably consider your future as a skydiver. No shit. Where people leave behind their lucrative jobs and worldly posessions and move onto the DZ to live in a tent and take orders from Redline. And yeah, I think it happens to a degree. Most of the people I know hang onto their lucrative jobs, though, and skydive on the weekends.Pet me! I'm harmless and cute!
TheMarshMan1 0 #14 January 15, 2002 I think he meant cutaway from a job to be a full time skydiver, not cutaway from a canopy. Or at least I hope, yikes....

I watched a guy with a good job cut away over the summer. He wants to be a super swooper - he started packing and living on the DZ. Last I heard he headed overseas for the winter.I need a vacation. lazerq3 0 #20 January 15, 2002 I just recently saw "cutaway" and I'd have to say I have some respect for that baldwin brother. If you watch his comentary on the DVD he made over 50 skydives for that movie, all the face shots of him jumping are real , along with maxine ???(the girl) and tom barenger, and he holds an A lic in skydiving , plus has over 4 hrs in the wind tunnel. So although the movie may have been a little cheesy what other actors can say they put out a descent skydiving movie,,,,, Charlie SHeen(term volocity) NOT!!!, That guy from DROPZONE (snipe or stipe???) I DONT THINK SO!!! jason
Jimbo 0 #21 January 15, 2002 QuoteCharlie SHeen(term volocity) NOT!!!Come on! Terminal Velocity was better than CutAway. At least the acting was better. The skydiving and video was probably better in CutAway. There was a thread a while back, probably a long while back, about various actors who had done skydives. There were a few who had managed to get their "A", more than I would have thought.-Jim
