Jessica 0 #51 January 17, 2002 I had one in my rig when I first bought it...I was one of those fresh-off-AFF-"MY life is worth $900!!!" types. Then the four-year check came due, and I was like..."$300?! Funk dat!!" Heh....And I think it's been really good for me to jump without it for a while. I really think, in the back of my mind, I was sort of relying on it. Like..."I don't HAVE to pull; the magic cypres will do it if I forget."So now I'm a lot more confident. I know the only way I'm walking away from that skydive is if *I* pull the handles. And I know I can do it.But, while it may be unlikely that you get knocked out in freefall...I've seen two close calls that convinced me it's a real possibility. The first was a guy new to solo status, who swung out the door and smacked his head against the side of the plane. I think he was unconcious for the first few seconds of freefall. He went to the doctor a little later, and it turns out he gave himself a concussion. The second is two-way a couple of close friends did. There was a "power dock," heads bashed, and the guy with no full-face helmet came away looking like an extra from "Fight Club."I'm getting my cypres put back in ASAP. But I'll continue to jump without it until then. Pet me! I'm harmless and cute!

I have a cypres, but I don't think of it as giving me the option of deploying or letting the "magic cypres" do it. I see it more as an annoyance that I don't really want to deal with, thus I pay enough attention to get open well above where it might go off. So, yea, it is a safety device, but I see it more as a dissuasion for going that low in the first place. My understanding is that it is sort of embarassing to have a cypres fire, so if you have a cypres, you are naturally going to think about pulling just a bit higher to avoid that whole situation, and in the process you are being a safer skydiver by having the cypres but not relying on the cypres."Can't keep my mind from the circling sky. Tongue-tied & twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I."

Hugo 0 #55 January 17, 2002 Sorry not too sure on the formatting ;-/ but...------------Jason said...> Did he get a premature deployment or was he just all kinds of unstable when he deployed.??---------- I'm not too sure, I watched it throughout, the delay between the entanglement and cyprus fire was a long time. so i would assume it was a normal to semi-low pull. It 'felt' like (for want of a better word) unstability or some other interference (hands, arm etc.) although I can't say with any certainty.Lucky he came round before landing too, I saw him do two quick turns before he went out of sight.
