Aviatrr 0 #2 January 20, 2002 Put your rig in an inconspicuous gear bag, don't tell anybody what it is unless they really need to know(such as the people at the security checkpoint), and don't worry about it.. If you have a Cypres, carry the card.. Go to the website for the airline you're flying, print out the page that states that sporting good equipment is ok for carry-on(it should specifically state sport parachutes), and carry that with you..Drop me an email before you head out to Orlando, maybe we can hook up at one of the local DZ's.. I jump at Titusville, Deland, ZHills, Lake Wales, and Sebastian.. Mike
dove 0 #3 January 20, 2002 Bryant,I have found it is really just a matter of luck. I have traveled my rig through Tampa, Baltimore and Green Bay since Sept. 11. I had trouble one time in Baltimore, but after they called the senior security guy he said no problem. But they had opened my container up so I had to repack at that point. Still, I got to take it on with me. A friend came to visit me recently from Dulles to Tampa. No problem in Dulles. On the way back the Tampa folks gave him a box and insisted he check his rig. But I had no problem when I was traveling out of Tampa. Guess it all depends on who's working that shift. I definitely say your chances are better with an inconspicuous bag though... Good luck!dove
Aviatrr 0 #4 January 20, 2002 Quote But they had opened my container up so I had to repack at that point. Do you mean that they opened up the bag you had your rig in, or they opened the main or reserve tray on your rig? I wouldn't let 'em open either one unless they had a rigger there to re-pack it under my supervision.. When I told 'em that in Phoenix, they backed down right away.. FallingILweenie 0 #5 January 20, 2002 I just took my rig to Chile with me, and on my way back we took the scenic route (Santiago, Buenos Aires, New York, Chicago -- it was the only thing i could get on that date that let me fly on mileage). What i did is i put my rig in a hard suitcase and then padded it with clothes, cuz i didn't want to take a chance with security. I dont think it would have been a problem heading down there (the Chicago-Dallas-Santiago leg) but heading back i had to empty out my carry-on bag 3 times in New York and twice in Buenos Aires. I am glad i didn't have my rig there because opening it there would have sucked. Instead, checking it worked out great and i didn't have to worry about it.Just my experience traveling with my rig....blue skiesTomas
AndyMan 7 #6 January 20, 2002 I would never check my rig as most airlines have a $500 maximum liability waiver for checked baggage.I've carried my rig on my big through o'hare, kenedy, and logan before Sept 11.I've carried my rig in a gear bag through many airports after Sept 11.I've never had a problem._Am
