FallRate 0 #1 January 28, 2002 I just noticed in the February issue of Parachutist that Skydive America Palm Beach has had it's USPA membership status terminated due to "indebtedness". I found this announcement to be rather shocking, as the DZ appeared "healthy" last year when I visited. As the DZ is primarily a training ground for FreeFlyers (though not entirely), I'm wondering if this has anything to do with USPA's lack of licensing requirements for FreeFlying and the fact that Skydive America uses and promotes the AD licensing system. Anyone have any info on this?I generally look at whether or not a DZ is a USPA member drop zone and give credit to the idea that by being a member they are following all safety practices that USPA has outlined. If any jumper unfamiliar with Skydive America were to make that same judgement now, they might find it lacking. But, in fact, my experience at the DZ was very, very positive in regards to the safety measures taken by both the DZO, staff and other jumpers.Again, I don't know the details. It just seems unfortunate that by being "terminated" from membership for any reason it may lead people to believe that the DZ is not living up to the safety standards set by the USPA, when in fact this DZ does. jtval 0 #2 January 28, 2002 maybe ENRON had something to do with it!SERIOUSLY, i dont have a clue why they closed but they may have appeared(never been there, just a guess) in good wrking order but that may be b/c no bills were getting paid.any business need constant petting and sometimes it just collapses out of what seems to be nowhere.i agree with you though it sucks to see a dz close. my home dz closed and the 1st words outta whuffos mouths were, WHY DID SOME ONE GET KILLED?" it was due to finances and the lease agreement with the airport.(owned by whuffos, who didnt much care for the "RISK") i miss the hell outta MY DZ! my mother sold the house i grew up in at the same time (3 weeks apart) and i was upset that my dz closed. the house didnt bother me!(I guess it was supposed to by the way everyone was acting)Have fun, LIVE FREE, SkydiveJT
Opie 0 #3 January 28, 2002 Just because a drop zone is no longer a USPA member certainly does not mean they have closed. I have not heard or read anywhere that Skydive America has closed and hope your post does not keep other skydivers from stopping by and making a few jumps. Word has it that they now have -34s on the otter which will make it one of the fasted in the country!
MarkM 0 #4 January 28, 2002 I heard a rumor that they closed a few months back too, but I'm fairly certain it was just that, a rumor.Call 561-924-2020 and get the lowdown from them yourself if you want. Last time I was out there a year back or so they seemed like a pretty cool bunch. I'm looking forward to jumping there.
