new name for whuffos

i was reading one of the letters to the editor by g.h.perry in the jan 2002 isue of skydiving regarding the common name for non-jumping type people. he (she?) was wondering if we could come up with a better name. he (she?) suggested 'groundhogs' (appropriate because apparently pigs cannot look up!). i like that one, and can't think of anything better... anyone else have a suggestion?

Personally I like "whuffos" and see no reason to come up with a new name.

I think (I know, scary) that you could TRY to change the name, come up with one, sanction it....
but everyone would still call them Whuffo's.

Uhh..are you sure it's meant to be a parody of black speech? I thought it was just generally intended to represent the ignorant and unknowing (ie the non-jumper)? At least...I HOPE it's not a term with its source in racism....but who knows eh?
Personally I like whuffos as a term.

I'm sorry if I offended anybody, but I would by lying if I said that the first time somebody told me what whuffo stood for I didn't envision a black guy. I know it's a stereotype, but I have also worked with and attended school with more than a few African-Americans who spoke that way. Lisa's explanation does makes plenty of sense as well, and I'd assume that she's right.

I'm sure that it does, but it also definately pokes fun of a style of speech. I also sincerely doubt that it is a racist term.

its not racist cause its used to descrbe anyone who doesnt want to jump its not really derogitive either its just taking the non-jumpers of which most of the ppl in the world are and giving them a name

i like to consider it (whuffos) not so much a racist or demeaning word. but there is a definite difference between US and THEM.
and that has nothing to do with race,creed,color religion or ....girth! there is just a different way of thinking! personally i like our way better. at the dz we are all having fun and looking oout for eachother(unless that all changed in the last few months)
that is where i have met some of the most REAL people in my life. all the bullshit is swept aside. so "whuffo" can be used in any situation but it is our word. whuffo you put stick on your feet and slide down a mountian. whuufo you lie on styrofoam and taunt hungry sharks....they surfers and die hard ski-ers have there terms too. no disrespect, just respect for each other and A whuffo YOU SIT ON THE COUCH AND WAIT TO DIE attitude.

"Whuffos" has the advantage that it's very widely used & has been around since the fifties or so when skydiving started. Tradition really.
