Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Well I made it through the winter, and Florida is only 2 weeks away! I am psyched, since I basically lived for this trip since I hurt my foot.
But now that it's almost time for me to go, I'm getting kind of nervous. Everytime I see an exit, or even think of it, I get butterflies in my stomach. This never happened to me while I was actually jumping, but now that I haven't jumped in 3 months, I'm at a stage that I'm actually a little scared.
Has this happened to anyone here, and if it did what did you guys do?
Is this normal, or am I just wimping out?

I'm about 5 days out from jumping in Arizona. I'm a student, and I'll be transitioning from my Cessna 182 Static Line program to Skydive AZ's ISP program, from bigger planes, from higher up, and to a different landing area.
It's been 4 months since my last jump, and I'm not nervous yet. I'm a little frightened of all the learning I'm going to have to do to leave an airplane with somebody else, and to fall for so long.
But for some reason, the scary part, actually climbing off the airplane, just isn't scaring me. I imagine this will start to hit me when I get to the DZ. I definately think that the fear is normal, and I'm feeling pretty darned unnormal for not fearing it right now.

by the time i jump again. it would have been 8 months. i have 102 jumps, im not very experienced but im not a beginner either but,i'm pretty sure ill be anxious (i dont call it scared, b/c i really dont think thats the's correct word.) the only nerves will be about the new dz(in a new country) not knowing anyone or the lay of the land. but in the long run that type of thing excites me.
i checked in on the safety forums and asked for a list of reminders. im gonna go see how that turned out.
have fun...being "scared" is only natural!
Have fun, LIVE FREE, Skydive

Yes, it's normal...don't worry about it.. Just relax when the time comes, and everything will come naturally.. Where in Florida are you going, and when? There are quite a few of us down here..

Yep..normal! I was a little apprehensive to say the least when I had 48 jumps and hadn't jumped in 6 months. It's not like anyone else can do it for you. All the bad feelings were gone once I got out the door. It was like being home again! :)"I got some beers....Let's Drink em!!!"

Fred,
I jumped this past weekend after 4 months off. I also did not have the apprehension you are talking about.
I did a level 5 aff jump to demonstrate my currency-- a jump from 14k with a couple of rw docks and turns. I was not apprehensive at all, very cool!
The only time I got nervous was on Sunday when I was going to do my first jump with a pull out pilot chute. The clouds were moving in and the pilot said he could only take us to 3k for a hop & pop. My dive plan had been to jump out at 14k and perform many practice pulls until opening at 4k. I stood by the side of the plane and spent a full 60 seconds debating whether or not to go up and finally decided not to.
I was bummed, this pretty much ended the weekend for me and would be a second time I had gone through transition training only to not jump. I turned in my gear and got ready to leave. But part of my brain said maybe it was fate and I was better off somehow by not jumping.
The pilot decided on the way up that he could go to altitude and the cloud cover from the ground was really just a haze that was safe to jump through.
So, the plane landed and it was determined I could go to do my jump-- that is when I started to get nervous. If fate had warned me before, did I really want to tempt it with a jump??
I did, and had a good jump. I didn't take advantage of the jump as much as I could have, I did a few turns and worked on forward and backward motion. Oh, and I did about 50 practice pulls, too :)
Hope your trip to AZ goes good!
Milo
