from my two cutaways...low speed both of em.... you do notice you are falling again and then it is a nice slow opening of your reserve, well not really slow but soft..... if ya want to take a look, here on dz.com i have a video of my last cutaway... it is in the video vault.. you need the divx codec and the name is ripped_main.avi .... it shows going from full flight to a cutaway... if ya listen closely ya can hear both handles come out of the velcro and the wind gets faster....please don't mind the curse words though...

I was always told that the first step when you have a malfunction is to yell "OH SHIT!!"

In my first-jump course, my instructor and I were going to go over malfunction drills, and I hopped into the harness and looked up at an imaginary ball of crap and jokingly said, "Oh, shit!" And my instructor got all excited and said, "That's exactly right!"
Pet me! I'm harmless and cute!

Aggie,

first you say it, then you do it..."

Yep, I can attest to that...except I didn't do it but if I had been aware of what I did, I probably would have...it just about knocked me cold...guess I got lucky on that one cause I'm still alive...lol. (And still screaming BOOBIES every chance I get...lol

Geez, I didn't even say "BOOBIES"

>What does it feel like when you cut-away?With an RSL. Does that reserve pop out before you even know your in freefall.
From a slow mal, it feels like a BASE jump or a helicopter jump. From a spinner, it feels like you've been fired from a slingshot. From a high speed mal it doesn't feel much different than freefall.
Cutaway story!!
My last tandem cert jump had to be with an experienced jumper with at least 100 jumps. Barri Cottle (wife of Mick, inventor of the Reflex and my boss at the time) hadn't jumped in about a year, but had about 150 jumps. She had just gotten sick of skydiving and decided it wasn't for her. I asked if she wanted to do a tandem. She said no. I badgered her, told her it would be free, I needed some help here, etc. Finally she said yes.
We exited and had a normal freefall. At pull time the opening seemed a little funky. I looked up and . . . lineover. It was a huge, lightly loaded 520 sq ft canopy so it hadn't even started to spin yet, but I could tell it was going to start.
"Oh, man, that was great, Bill! I forgot how much fun that was! Thanks for . . . uh . . . why are we spinning?"
I was yanking on brakes and snapping risers, trying to clear it, but it wasn't responding. "Take a look above you," I told her.
"Oh shit! What the hell is that? What are you gonna do?"
I was about to give up - it wasn't going to clear, and I couldn't hold it straight with one toggle. "What do you think we should do?" I asked her. After all, she was an experienced jumper too - I figured I'd ask.
"Don't give me that feel-good shit! Just do something!!" she screamed. (Terry, half a mile away and 5000 feet below us, heard this and looked up.)
"OK, gimme an arch," I said, as I cut away and pulled the reserve. We went back into freefall for a good five seconds - we had no airspeed when I chopped, and those Strong tandem reserves are huge. "Oh fuck! Oh fuck!" she kept screaming as we fell for what seemed like forever. Finally the reserve opened. Terry told me he could hear her as clear as day.
"OK, good reserve, we should be fine," I told her. She was hyperventilating. We landed with no problem. She got very drunk that night, and by the next weekend, was back skydiving again.
