SpeedRacer 1 #28 January 17, 2002 Lara,It was very inspiring to read your post! As a scientist who has worked on cancer research off & on for years, I love to hear it when cancer survivors tell their stories. A woman in my lab had breast cancer & got cured too. The public really needs to hear that cancer is not an automatic death sentence, that in many cases (in fact, MOST cases with breast & many other forms of cancer) cancer IS curable. Much of the public still persists in shying away from people w/cancer, thinking there is no hope. It pisses me off when I hear ignorant people saying, "Well, we're no closer to a cure for cancer than we were thirty years ago!" People like your mother need to be heard & the public needs to be educated.Right now I'm working on a project using a genetically modified adenovirus (the common cold virus). We are using a promoter gene in the virus that allows the virus to replicate in tumor cells, but not in normal cells. So the virus will spread through all the tumor cells & kill them, but then stop if it infects a neighboring healthy cell. Keep fighting the good fight!Speed Racer"My God! It's full of stars!"
