kmcguffee 0 #1 February 22, 2002 This crap is getting out of control. I haven't heard so much whining since my dog had a litter of 10 puppies. From MSNBC:QuoteSALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 22 — Russian officials protested the women’s Olympic figure skating final Friday, saying silver medalist Irina Slutskaya should get her own gold medal because of biased judging. Hell, let em protest figure skating...why not throw in curling and pairs foose-ball? As long as they have less than 10 protests they can take the express lane.
 bbarnhouse 0 #7 February 22, 2002 I REALLY hate to do this.........but I will. I am upper level judge for one of the US Olympic sports. Generally in judged sports there are those that judge artistic impression with an equal compliment of those that judge technical merit.Generally each panel consists of 7 -9 judges; on each panel one high score and one low score are discared . These judges work for years to attain their ratings and are chosen by the IOC. What I would say is this.....judges are suppose to judge what they see on a given day and not "face judge". It is an extremely difficult task but at the heart of it all is the ideology that we always put the athlete first in all relationships. The soap opera here is indeed unfortunate. Would it be better to have judges score routines and then have a computer decide the overall winner? Or perhaps eliminate judged sports altogether? This would take out gymnastics, synchronized swimming,Ice skating, ice dance, rhythm gymnastics etc........I will be interested to hear you responses. :)It only takes a little pixie dust...... What happened to just being proud of making it to the olympics? The media tends to focus on the 'soap opera' aspect because that sells the most papers/gets the most viewers. Overall, it is still a very healthy competition.
