DENGOPHER 0 #1 February 22, 2002 what's wrong with some people in this sport?? i was just reading a post that someone still on student status wrote.. some instructor was cracking on her skills to another student or skydiver and it got back to her...what a dumb ass!!!!! instructors are supost to be suportive and helpfull... i'm still new only 44 jumps but i found a great group of people to jump with and get a lot of help... and i am learning that that dose not happen alot... it shouldn't be so hard for new skydivers to find help.. i hope to be an instructor in a summer or two.. i will have my bic. and coach rating this year..and i know how hard it is to get started so i will do my best to help new jumpers that need help.. just as long as i am jumping i am having fun.. we should do our best to keep all the new people we can to help the sport grow.. i love skydiving and i will never quit .. i just hope i can help some people along the way....just jump!!!gopher
NtheSeaOrSky 0 #2 February 22, 2002 Bad news: It happens. A Lot.Good news: Those of us it happened to share in your view. We are gonna give back till it hurts! Maybe it is a blessing in disguise! quade 4 #3 February 22, 2002 In all fairness to the instructor -- you've only heard the student's side of this story. It's my experience that the truth usually lies somewhere -between- the two parties stories.quadehttp://futurecam.com

bbarnhouse 0 #5 February 22, 2002 It is the mentality of you and those like you that will help the sport to grow. I have been to several drop zones in the nation and it is so interesting to see how each has it's own flavor and personality. Too bad that the few "inept" instructors don't realize that we lose a lot of folks because of their impact on students. It is important to always give back to the sport that you love.It only takes a little pixie dust......

PhreeZone 20 #7 February 22, 2002 In all teachers lifetimes there will be points where they feel it is in the best intrest of the student to discourage them. This may be do to saftey/money/physical problems, or it could be used as motivation. How the student handles the discouragement makes the difference of an instructor vs a teacher.Would you really want to be told you are doing every correctly if you are too unstable to pull? I have no ide if that comment applies to the jumper in question but its food for thought.....Cause I don't wanna come back down from this cloud... ~ Bush

Sebazz1 2 #11 February 22, 2002 QuoteToo bad that the few "inept" instructors don't realize that we lose a lot of folks because of their impact on studentsThere are absolutely some poor instructors out there. But one inportant thing to think about is the student themselves. Some times teaching some people is very hard and you have to adjust to match their personality and so on. Some folks just don't match But I have seen the students that come in and are listening to me and are pretty much like "yeah yeah whatever just let me outta the plane" attitude. Some people you have to shock them or be a dick to get the required response. Some people it just takes extra training. A lot of people do not belong in the sport for their own good and our own good. But it takes several several jumps before I or other instructors at out DZ get discouraged. But if someone quits skydiving and blames their instructors you must realize that it's just an excuse. But again skydiving isn't politely exiting an aircraft anf floating like a leaf to the ground. I got spring fever.........I can't come in today..............Seb

Iflyme 0 #13 February 23, 2002 Skydivers represent a cross section of all types of people -- and unfortunately, some people are dickheads! Thus, some skydivers are dickheads, too... just be true to yourself!
Emmie 0 #14 February 23, 2002 I see skydiving as a personal responsibility, so I would never blame the instructor for my own mistakes. I do agree that some people are just incompatible. But sometimes instructors should have some tact. I know that a jm must be dissapinted to some extent when a student screws up, but they have to take into concideration the fact that the student probably fells 10 times worse. AFF is stressfull enough without all the extra shit. I had so much confidence when I started out, and I lost it not because I had to repeat a level but because of the negative attitude. I'm not gonna give up because of it, but it does suck to know that your jm sees you as hopeless.
Beachbum 0 #15 February 23, 2002 seriously ... do NOT let it get you down ... there was an entire article in Parachutist a few months ago about students that some JM's considered write-offs ... getting with a different JM and doing great. I think it was titled something along the lines of "Problem Student, or Problem JM?". Students are expected to make mistakes, and you should not feel bad about doing so. It's much better to make your mistakes while a JM is there to help you thru them and how to avoid repeating them than to do it later when you're jumping on your own. Find yourself a more upbeat JM and you'll be improving in no time! I was very lucky to have that type of JM to start with.
