My AOL account was HACKED!

Recommended Posts

So I go to log on this morning....."password invalid"
Find out that AOL froze my account after 162 e-mails were sent out in 10 minutes.
Finally I got back in and saw that 162 e-mails, each to 12 people, were sent with a link to a porn site!
So.....1,944 people think that I am a porno queen.
That is fucking great! :(

Anne,
Do you think it was an actual "hack" into AOL, or was there a chance that someone may have seen/heard the password? Not that it makes much difference at this point, but I'm curious.
By the way, you didn't deny being a porno queen. We do have pictures of you at a sex party, you know! :)Justin

Hahaha, something similar happened to a friend of mine once, he got an e-mail virus that effects Outlook...well, basically it sent everyone in his address book an e-mail telling them to follow the link to see some new pictures of himself. It was linked directly to some hard-core porn.
What's funny, is that he was a student leader on campus, so just aboue EVERYone in any sort of position on campus, faculty, school president, etc. got the e-mail. Lets just say he was sorta embarresed.

You don't need the "information" from her computer to gain access to an account on a different computer. It can be done many different ways with out even having the knowledge that her account was their in the first place...:)"I'll do it man, I'll hack the Gibson..." :Dj/k

There's software to help protect your computer, but what happened to her wasn't on her computer, it was on AOL's server...so it goes to show that once again AOL has been proven a worthless piece of shit...

Was there ever any doubt? :)"Let the rabbits wear glasses. . . "

I worked for a service provider and it doesn't matter which one it is, but they all can be hacked. You just have to trust that they have thier security up to date and firewalls in place and then still cross your fingers and hope someone doesn't get in.
The thing with aol is that no service providers block email from those accounts. Hotmail, yahoo, and several other are sometimes blocked just because they are large producers of spam. At my last company I worked in systems (solaris) administration, and worked hand in hand with our security department to keep our servers locked down from those who shouldn't be there. *knock on wood* None of my systems were ever hacked into, but the NT guys weren't as lucky. The abuse department received upwards of 100 complaints a day about spam, sometimes the account had been hijacked, sometimes the address had been faked.
There is no way to 100% prevent hijackings, but there are some things you can do to protect yourself.
1) Make your password something that isn't a word adding numbers, capitals, symbols(depends on the service provider).
2) Don't make it a phrase that is easy to figure out like ou812, My!password, Dusk2dawn.
3) have something that is almost random, if you need to have your cat (or small child) play on your keyboard.
Unfortunately your ISP is probably sending your password out to thier authentication server in plain text, so my best advice for that is every month change your password.

Go here and download ADWARE 5.62
This is a program that finds and kills hidden programs in your computer that do things like tell uncle sam where you are surfing, it finds the programs that send your passwords to people, and other good things. A friend of mine at the FBI told me about it. This is what the FBI uses.
