I did a cool solo tracking dive for my first jump today... ProTrack said the average for the first half was 86 mph! That's slow...
Then went up and did an 11 way RW jump. Good skydive, bad opening. Had a toggle unstow and the canopy opened hard in a right hand spiral. Popped the other one and it straightened right out but sure had my heart beating for a second or two there - I'm like "what's up with that??"
Then the winds were funky; was headed for the grass on final, about 100 feet and I hit something weird - the canopy started going right and sinking with no input from me. Put on some left toggle and got it flying straight, then it came out of it and surged forward. Felt my heart beating but was too busy workin' it to get scared. Managed to get it settled down in time to make a nice stand up landing... I'd heard someone else say the same thing had happened to them earlier in the day, so I called it a day.
Now my back is sore as hell from that opening... very thankful I have Vicadin in the cabinet and beer in the fridge! :)pull and flare,

You got spanked by your Spectre? Or was it the diving turn?
I occasionally get that when I collapse my slider. The grommets just barely fit over my toggles so every once in a while I'll pull it down & it pops a toggle. WHOA!

Well, I dunno for sure... all I know is it seemed to open a bit faster than usual, then I was lookin' down at the ground, spinning to the right. Did about a 540 total before I had the other toggle popped and it was flying straight again. I'm not sure if it was the speed of the opening or the g's of the spiral that made me hurt.
What was worrying me was that it wasn't the back muscles that were hurting, it felt like it was in the bones. Luckily after a couple of ibuprofen and a beer that pain has gone away... hoping there's no permanent damage... I do NOT want to go through what I did last year ever again!!

We have been seeing this sort of thing happen with risers that have open toggle keepers. The top of the toggle knub is exposed. Put PD "Slinks" on there and there is nothing to slow the slider down from hitting that knub and knocking a toggle loose. We're pushing people to get different risers or have their current risers modified so that it can't be knocked out. I think Relative Workshop's "True Lock" system is great. We are also pushing people to get the riser hard housings installed because the resulting spiral (or spin) can, and has, thrown people into unrecoverable line twists on heavily loaded canopies.
Is this a possibility with what happened to you?

Nope... I've got 2" risers with standard links and velcro toggles; no toggle keepers but the slider never comes down past the links. Just been too lazy to change the risers out to the ones that came with my container... I think my problem was I did a half assed job of stowing the brakes; I've been doing it in the landing area before I gather the canopy up and that time I did it with gloves on.

So which is better? Vicodine or percocet? I have both sitting here. And what goes well with that? Corona or Miller Lite?

Hey Lisa, on the 10-way before that jump a guy had a cutaway from a similar situation. The slider grommet actually made like a knot out of the brake line. He couldn't undo it nor unstow his other toggle. Cutaway at 800 feet.

PD makes canopies all day long, you only have one life, when in doubt, cut away...

Funny. The exact same thing happened to me on Saturday....in freakin' Chicago (with a left, instead of a right turn).
Must be some kind of Twilight Zone sort of thing.

Yesterday I arrived at the club a bit late, and saw kinda the same thing happening to someone else.
All jumpers kept on jumping while almost every canopy acted a bit funny close to the ground.
My girlfriend and I decided not to jump and saw a few more craéshlandings on the next two loads, right after that the decision was made to stop the activities for the day.
Maybe sometimes not jumping is the best sollution to bumpyness, I'll jump next week.
Keeping it safe should be priority nr. 1
Will jump for beer, bs AiRpollUtiOn
