flyhi 24 #1 February 25, 2002 Despite what English, History, and Theater Arts majors think, the moon's orbit about the earth is not a perfect circle, but rather an ellipse. Yes, yes, elliptical like a Stiletto, now, pay attention. This Wednesday the moon will be at its perigee, the point where it will be closer to the earth than any other this year. That same night, 27 February, is a full moon. That means, right after sunset the moon should be low on the horizon and HUGE!! As it climbs the sky, it will appear to diminish in size. If you want to see an incredible sight, catch it at sunset. If you miss seeing the one this Wednesday, the next closest to the earth full moon will be on Thursday, 28 March. The difference in the distance from the earth to the moon for these two events will be approximately 75 miles. 75 miles over 220,000 miles is nothing, so that should also be a good show. The apogee full moon will be in October. The difference for us is the moon will appear 14% bigger on Wednesday and reflected light will appear 40% brighter than the apogee full moon.Night jumps anyone? Just take it one day at a time, like the drunks do.flyhi

LawnDart21 0 #5 February 25, 2002 I've only got 430 jumps to date, but by far the coolest jump I have made yet, was my first night jump for my B License last March in Lake Wales. It was a full moon, not a cloud in the sky. I was out first on my pass as a solo opeing at 3000ft. (ie, no one below me), so I left the FrankenOtter head down and turned to face the moon. I held a head down position the entire jump, just staring at this AWESOME sight of a full moon, but inverted becuase I was upside down. It was the most stunning visual I have ever seen. I still remember it like it was yesterday. A total "zen" moment."I live to EFS"Tom
lummy 4 #6 February 25, 2002 Since it's elliptical, how many jumps should I have before attempting this?JUST KIDDING!!!!!Still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest....
LawnDart21 0 #7 February 25, 2002 The sunset pic I posted is completely unrelated to the full oon story, it's a cool picture that I captured thisweekend off some DV tape. "I live to EFS"Tom

billvon 3,120 #11 February 26, 2002 >That means, right after sunset the moon should be low on the horizon and HUGE!! Uh, well, it will seem 5% bigger than average, at least. I'm not sure that will be a huge difference.-bill von
Iflyme 0 #12 February 26, 2002 When the moon is low on the horizon, we are looking at it thru lots of atmosphere ... that MAY magnify the image slightly, but the the juxtaposition of earth bound objects (trees, buildings, etc) gives us a frame of reference that makes the moon APPEAR larger than normal ... and dust in our atmosphere scatters light in the reddish wavelength which gives the moon that lovely orangey glow.Eyes to the Skies! I once new someone who talked like this. Maybe he was a physics major?Nathan
