True story

Recommended Posts

I had the good fortune of being able to drive to SLC to see the Olympics last week (which is another story)with Littljumper. The trip is about 750 miles and about a 10 hour drive with most of the drive thru the Nevada High Desert. For anyone who has not been there, While the high desert mountains are very picturesque, they are in the distance. There are long stretches where there is little else of note except for the occasional sage brush that scoots across the highway.
On the return trip, I was about 6 hours into the drive, about an hour away from the nearest signs of civilization in either direction and bored to tears. Hoping for anything to break the monotony, I turned on the car radio hoping for something, anything. I hit the scan button to find an available station and watched the numbers go spinning all the way up to 107.7 and starting again at the beginning. I was starting to get a little worried that even the radio was a lost cause when it suddenly stopped. A song started playing and from the way the guitar sounded, I knew it would be country music, which at that point anything would be a welcome sound.The singing started and predictably, a slow southern drawl was telling me that it was okay to chew tobacco and to have a girlfriend named Mary Jo Bob.It all became clear to me as he sang the chorus "IT'S OKAY TO BE A REDNECK"
All I could do was laugh....

Hahah, I can sympathize about not finding good radio stations on that stretch of I-80 (or did you take 50?)...
I've gone down that way (both ways) many many times on far too many roadtrips to count, usually going to Bryce Canyon (aaahhhhhh if only I could skydive over Bryce!!!!) Anyway, I keep a pretty decent-sized list of radio stations across the country, and I have a few for I-80 and U.S. 50 stretches... although you're out of luck for most of 50 anyway..
battle mountain = 99.3
elko = 93.5, 97.3
ely = 101.7
fallon = 99.3
each one is available for about 40-mile radius around the town; some like elko's last longer.
they're all 80's-90's-00's rock/pop kind of stations.. either that or old rock-n-roll oldies from 50s or 60s.. no country in them! but i think most of THESE fall in the first category..
(yes, that is what i call "decent-size" list.... cant do much better than that across the nevada desert!!!)

heehee.... Thank for the tip ;)
I just thought it was funnythat here I am out inthe middle of nowhere and the only thing I could get on the radio was a song about the fact that it's okay to be a redneck.

And NOT that there is anything wrong with being one..

Well, that was EXTREMELY funny! We had practically dead silence, I was reading..an interesting book by the way about a secret agent man who underwent plastic surgery....uh...wait, that's another story!! But anyway, so Gary starts checking stations...and it was JUST hillarious to hear that phrase, "It's OK to be a redneck" HUH? well, that's a matter of opinion I believe. We both just cracked up in laughter....broke the silence for sure!
So, as far as the CD player, we had one...built into the rental truck we had. Problem was, we pretty much went through all the CD's we brought!
It was a great trip nonetheless...and we had a GREAT time in SLC! Men's slalom on Saturday was awesome!
What you "think" you cannot do ...you CAN if you "think" about it ;)
