rec.skydiving post statistics

Recommended Posts

Just going to be the Devils Advocate for a moment....
rec.skydiving is one free-for-all forum correct?
dz.com is a moderated forum with a buncha of different topics and sections..
It would seem fair that we have a higher total number of posts due to the amount of different topics / sections..
Clue me in if I'm wrong or is your stat just from the "Talk Back" section of the forum...

Maybe I'm just reading too much into this, but my guess would be he's trying to figure out ad rates.

Nope. I've done that already - you can see it over here
I was just curious as to what the comparative activity levels are - but to your point, it seems like you have a better chance of getting your message out over here than posting to rec.skydiving.

Not really. There's nothing to prevent you from posting on any of these topics in rec.skydiving. It's just that over here we've taken rec.skydiving and broken it up into relevant forums, removed some of the noise around the topical boards to facilitate constructive discussion and added a very limited number of local rules that will foster a community that you'd actually "want" to belong to. (a basic need)
Just a few local rules, gives you global order (for free!) in a community that's probably constantly moving towards the edge of chaos - where all complex systems (like communities) have the most potential and is loaded with immanent creativity. Whalaa! Complexity Theory at work! :)It's seems like rec.skydiving is suffering from reverse-synergy. The total is worth less than the sum of the parts. ;)

What would be more interesting is the number of read impressions that each site generates. I know you can't get an accurate count from usenet, but I know way more people lurk the Wreck then post while more people post then lurk here.
Read impressions would be a good measure of how effective each place is in getting your message out .

Hmm, I don't think that's true -- check out the "Who's online" and there's generally a lot more people logged on who don't have any posts than there are regular posters.
And those're just people who've bothered to create a profile. I see plenty of "Anonymous -- reading a post in threaded mode" out there.
