That'll be another good beer country, home of Budovar, the true king of beers, not like that imposter Budweiser, plus they've started selling Absinthe there again which is well wikkid.

From the vocabulary word for a Romani or traveller. The word derives from Egyptian, as in the Middle Ages the Romanis were believed to have come to Europe from Egypt; in fact they dispersed from an original home in north India.
more useless info from OED.

Absinthe is illegal in the USA, who knows why. But I live in DC. Last summer the Czech embassy held an event in which you could try absinthe. An embassy is sovereign territory of that country, so they could do this legally. Unfortunately I didn't get to go. So what's it like, & why is it illegal?

"so what happend in Egypt?"
Well...nothing in particular except I thought I was going to have to kill this cabbie and dump his body in the river. Every time you step outside the gate of the hotel you are attacked by cabbies and street kids trying to get 10 times the amount locals pay for stuff. Ummm.....tell them you are German or some other European and it helps. Yes...it's very dirty and smelly. Just like the rest of the middle east. I'm glad I saw the pyramids but I didn't leave anything there!!!

Strong aniseed taste, nice with soda/7 up. Its a green coloured spirit made in Czech land.
It used to have a hallucinogenic in it which is probably why it was outlawed in a load of countries. It was very popular with artistic types around the turn of the 19th century, drove a few of them mad though. The stuff they make nowadays and sell legitimately does not have the halucinogens in it allegedly. Its becoming more available in Europe now.
Gets you giggly drunk real quick, but bars in the UK are charging a fortune for it. I brought back a couple of bottles of the stuff for those special occasions ;), they cost me about 8 bucks each for 0.7 litre bottles. Prague is a great place, beutiful city, cheap, loads of fun, and they have a kick ass boogie at Karlovy Vary each year.
Wanna try some Slappie? I could bring a bottle out next time I'm home.....

QuickDraw,
If they are selling it in bars in the UK it will be the non hallucinogenic variety, they just charge a fortune because of its reputation and its kinda fashionable.
I had a few snifters in a bar in Aberdeen last week, for scientific research purposes doncha know ;) and it definitely wasn't the supercharged hooch variety. More like a very expensive Pernod/petrol mix.

SNORE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Well if I can't get high on it these days, why even discuss it?!?!?! Jeez!! LOL
I did always wonder what absinthe was though. I knew it was a liquer, and something of the cough syrup variety, but didn't know what was in it that made it addictive/maddening/outlawed....
Out of curiosity....was absinthe Doc Holliday's weakness when he had TB???
