There is a guy at Otay that kinda swoops the tandems. He just kinda stalls it about 50-100 feet up and then planes it out and get a small surf out of it. I have never seen him biff a tandem landing.

I used to do that on our Strong 425's - it was about the only way to get a decent landing out of them.

I know quite a few people jumping Strongs (Everyone I've ever seen) use this technique. I have to ask though, how does it improve landings? Is it possible that by coming to a near stop and then letting go you'll actually gain more speed that you had a full glide? Or is it about slowing things down just a hair before landing? What's the theory here?

Yeah... just ask a fairly famous swooper about having his USPA membership and all his rating revoked for a brief peroid due to an "interesting" jump....
All I can say is that had to suck....

I heard a story about a guy who stood on the tandem masters back holding the drogue in his hand. They got it on film. And they showed everybody. Needless to say it got in the wrong hands and license revoked.
Is this what you are talking about Phreezone?

Nope... keep guessing... :)Those who know what/who I'm talking about are probally laughing at the memory of it. I heard about it through a third party and had to look it up myself to believe it.....

Damnit, I know who/what you're talking about and I'm trying to find a video on the internet. A popular 'Reality' TV show (currently being bashed in another fourm) aired it a while back, I thought I could maybe get a copy of the video from their website, but apparently the website is either down or unreachable from my network.
Damnit!

I'm looking, but apparently RealTV no longer maintains a website, at least www.realtv1.com is no longer around. It's not on Craig Poxon's site either. Maybe someone who jumps with him could get a VHS copy and encode it.
This is a little disappointing, it really is a sweet video.

What we do is, at about 100 feet,go into about 3/4 brakes. As the canopy attains lift, smoothly let the canopy go back into full flight. The acceleration is transfered into lift at the bottom end of the 'dynamic landing' as the guys at RWorkshop like to call it. This landing technique will give great stand-up landings consistently. As a matter of fact, as a tandemI/E, I teach how to do it in the tandem course. Go to any large dz(like Deland) and you will see this used daily with great results. Peace

"stood on the tm's back holding the drogue in his hand".
i know this incident ,and know both jumpers concerned, both of who are quite competent to do this. the photo was published in a skydive mag.there was no licence revoked, but both did recieve a slap on the wrist
as for swooping tandems, all the tm's i work with do at least a 120degree hook turn,90 degrees is not enough, all get stand up landings in front of video man nearly everytime.the only time i've seen anyone thump in ,was using a straight in approach.(they don't work here anymore).
the "double brake" approach is very good ,if you are a learner ,or using an older type canopy.
(all the tm's i'm talking about have way more than 2000 tandems.)
i was intending to keep out of this thread, but alcohol got the best of me.
