Airport security...too much?

Recommended Posts

I am curious on what you guys think about this. I was driving home from student teaching today and I heard on the news that they evacuated a whole terminal because they found a pair of scissors in the terminal. Also, I heard they made a plane en route to Puerto Rico turn around and come back.
Are we being TOO cautious and/or scared? Or is all of this necessary for our safety? Chime in here. :)JumpinDuo.com...come and sign the guestbook.

Until they actually have adequate security at the terminals I think it's necessary. The problem right now is that they know security isn't strong enough, so if they find one slight thing amiss, they have to assume they missed something else as well.
Once they actually have proper screening of people and packages and can identify the source of threats I think the responses will be more appropriate.

no kiddig if I want to go to Dallas which is about a 4 hr drive and a 45 min flight, I'll drive. Cause you have to park off the airport now so there is 30-45 min, then plan on 2 hrs for security, then the flight 45 min, then since my friend can't meet me at the gate trying to find her 45-60 min. total = 4hrs 30 min Max time. Plus if I drive I can take all the skydiving crap and my dog with :)

Ahh, a thought!!! Maybe this would be better asked of the people who lost relatives and friends on Sept. 11th. I personally don't care how long it takes to get on a flight...I have all the time in the world, but some people don't. Maybe if we all slow down a little bit, it'll work out...Just a thought, mind you.

The problem is defining what is adequate security in the terminals. When I think about how easy it is to smuggle a knife, or a gun, or a bomb that looks exactly like a boom box into a terminal, it amazes me that we went as long as we did without an incident like 9/11.
We can easily come up with ways to stop stupid criminals. Smart criminals are a lot tougher to stop. Brilliant criminals are unstoppable. At some point we're going to have to decide our airport security is good enough and call it a day, and hope to stop at least most of the people who would cause trouble.

Someone must have been running with them.....:D
Seriously....They have to act stupid for another year or so. Without going into too much detail I can tell you that the US Govt is taking great strides to ensure that air passengers are safe. They have this almost rediculous stuff going on right now because they are using "stop Gap" measures to try and keep people safe until the real safety measures get in place. Once the air travel is taken care of there are plans to secure other modes of travel such as busses, trains, and shipping. One day in the not so distant future any "terrorist" that boards almost any form of public transportation with the intent of hijacking it will be taken care of in very short order. This is going to take time....be patient......until then lets try and keep "fake grenades" out of our luggage....:)"I only have a C license, so I don't know shit..right?"-Clay

Yeah, but with current security you could still take everything you need to vilolently take over an aircraft, so they (airport ppl) have really accomplished nothing but scare the hell out of people and become a huge time waste. Stuff like CIA letter openers (if you know what those are), putting small stilloeto blades in the sole of your steel toed boots (see sir, its steel toe boot, that's why they're going off), etc. Remember something very important with all of this: That security guard is making Minimum Wage, that's it, do you think that they are being payed enough to get quality workers or workers that really give a flying fuck? (no pun intended) The problem isn't the amount of security, its the quality of security...

Dave...it really doesn't matter how much you pay the screeners or what kind of whizzo devices you have. True or false....People are killed every day in High-Maximum security prisons with homemade weapons. Do you really think it's possible to keep every form of weapon of an airplane. I don't...Finally the government realizes this too. They are putting measures in place that will take care of just about any threat imagineable.

I absolutely agree that it is ridiculous. Is it just me or doesn't anybody remember how the terrorist took over the airplanes. THEY GOT INTO THE FLIGHT DECK!!!!! No they didn't shot their way in, no they didn't blow their way in with explosives. They forced their way in because the doors were not secured.
I recently returned from the Winter Expo in Chicago. On take off on my connecting flight into Daytona the flight deck door CAME OPEN. The flight attendant reached over and held the door to keep it from completely opening. I was SOOOO pissed. At that point, if I had been some crazed terrorist, I could have easily rushed the flight deck from my seat.
The real pisser was that the flight deck door appeared to have been recently reinforced to keep people from punching their way in the bottom.
I was really inclined to have a word with the pilot in command about the lack of his security check once we landed.

Clay, if you don't pay enough to get quality workers or workers that atleast care, then they're not going to care. 3 years ago I walked on to a flight with my Spyderco Endura clipped in my pocket. (big nasty looking serrated blade) Not a problem, not even a second glance. Technically, I wasn't supposed to be able to carry that on the plane, I was supposed to check it.
Ok, lets say you hire someone to watch your house. Do you want someone who is willing to work for $5 an hour and didn't graduate highschool, or do you want a professional that insists on $10 because he was specially trained to do his job and he takes it seriously?

Dave....My Dad was an airline pilot for 42 years. I've been going through many an airport since I was little. I once carried a pellet gun in carry on by accident when I was about 10. I didn't go through the security that day. (Good danm thing too) :)"I only have a C license, so I don't know shit..right?"-Clay

You've seen Airplane (the movie), right? Where all of those terrorists walk through with machine guns and stuff and the grandma is stopped and searched? Your post made me think of that. :)"Give me one ping and one ping only..."
