Schliek20 0 #1 March 7, 2002 I am in the process of getting my license. I will be in the position of buying a good rig. My problem is that I am confused at all the differences between them. I lost on rig and main size. I'm 20 years old very athletic 6'0" 200 lbs. I need help.
lazerq3 0 #2 March 7, 2002 Best thing to do...ask your DZ (people at our DZ). People that know your skill level are better to ask. There is also a lot of info here if you look around. Basically in a nut shell canopies are measured in square ft 170 = 170sqft and so on. The smaller the canopy usaully the faster the ride depending on wing loading....and theres a whole other thread to talk about....just look around this sight and tons of your ???will be answered!!!jason
rhino 0 #3 March 7, 2002 Get a PD reserve.. A Triathlon main.. And a Jevelyn container.. RSL.. And a Cypress if you can afford it.. You can't go wrong with that combo. You will be 225ish out the door.. Get a Triathlon loaded at 1.0 for your first canopy. And a reserve loaded the same.. rhino 0 #5 March 7, 2002 I told him to jump what I would put my son on.. There are reasons for the selections.. But you are right. Allot of good combinations.. I believe the Triathlon is absolutely the BEST first canopy for anyone.. My son will have one when he starts jumping. It is great in wind, turbulence, chop, and it's easy to pack..Blue Skies and Smooth Rides!! http://www.aahit.com

Given short cash, don't you think any of the other perfectly good containers WITH a cypres would be better? There's a certain individual here (who drives a brand spankin new yuppie car) who told me he can't afford a cypres. PhreeZone 20 #7 March 7, 2002 Good points Andy. Is it better to have all new good looking gear, or to have mismatched gear and be able to jump twice as much? Currency is the name of the game here folks. Going uncurrent can injure you quicker then you ever thought. Doing 100 jumps a year is low timing it at my DZ. I only did 225 last summer and was accused of not jumping enough. Spend the money on the jumps, not fancy gear. Get something thats safe, but screw buying new, get used.Personally... Tris good, Spectre better, Saber good, Sabre2 better (I can't wait for my demo You can't go wrong with a Sabre. They are cheap to find, last forever, and everyone has jumped on at some point. Most people go to 9 cells so start off that way.I started on a Spectre and it was better in every way over a Tri. I went 7 to 9 cell and it was a change.Dolphins are cheap and black... nothing wrong with that... Javelins are pricey, and so are 50% of the other rigs.Everyone wants to tell you thier gear combo is/was the best as justification to themselfs for getting it. Its going to be rare that you hear someone say "I just spent $5000 on a new custom rig, and I hate everything about it, but I got to recommend it to you."Cause I don't wanna come back down from this cloud... ~ Bush
MarkM 0 #8 March 7, 2002 Well, I'm no expert But first thing is to keep it slow. You don't have to buy your own gear right off student status. Learn about the gear, get advice from the people at your dropzone and then go to the gear forum here and ask questions. For example people here are recommending Triathalons. Go to the gear review section and read up the reviews on that canopy. Go to the manufacturer's website and download the manuals for that canopy.Just narrow down your choices, then ask more specific advice on whatever gear you happen to like. All the gear is "good" gear. No one is producing crappy containers or canopies. It mostly comes down to preference and price. Once you start looking over the options you'll naturally get a feel for it. Then when some newbie asks you what canopy he should jump you'll tell him to buy a Triathalon because you owned one.Btw, buy a Triathalon. They're a great canopy. Just about every container manufactured in the past 5 years is pretty damn good. Yes, the all have their pluses and faults, some more so then others. (personally, I like Wings, but that's neither here nor there). For a reserve, you can't go wrong with a PD, although they are expensive, in my opinion, they are worth it. As for a main. Get just about any (just about any, there are some I would and wouldn't use, but those are, once again, my opinions) non-elliptical ZP loaded at 1.1:1 or so. If it was me, I would get a Hornet, a Sabre or a Triathalon, but that's just me. Cypress? Yeah, get one, they're great. Note, though, I can't afford one, so I don't jump with one. I trust myself to pull something for myself, the falacy in that is the chance that I might get knocked out in freefall, in that case, I'm screwed and I become a divot. When you get down to it, the bottom line is go ask your JM, the DZO where you jump, etc. Ask people who know you, then double check what they say with someone you can trust, like Bill Von, RiggerRob, Skybytch, etc. (although skybytch will tell you you need a 300sq ft PD for your main j/k much love Lisa...).When you ask 4 skydivers a question, you will generally get 6 answers in which they believe whole heartedly and will argue very very fervantly in the "fact" that it is the truth. Take a look at the Gear section of this website (click on the Gear link at the top of the page). There you'll find a number of articles that address the very problem you're having, and there are also a bunch of gear reviews that will confuse... err I mean help you decide which container, main, reserve, helmet, etc might be right for you.Talk to your instructors about gear. They have the advantage of having seen you fly and land and can usually give you good advice about canopy sizing. Call or email one or two of the "major" gear dealers and ask what they would recommend - most have active, experienced skydivers answering the phones/emails and they can usually give you good advice about getting gear to fit your budget, risk tolerance, location, weight and experience level.Take what anybody says about gear with a grain of salt (or two). The gear I jump is what I decided is best for me; while it's the perfect rig for me and parts of it might be perfect for you, just because it is perfect for me does not mean that it is perfect for anyone else (did that make any sense at all??).The best way to decide what gear is right for you is to jump several different containers and mains; that way you can decide what you like best. pull and flare,lisa---Mondays suck
 rhino 0 #14 March 7, 2002 He can get a Dolphin for all I care,, I was just saying Javelyn..
