AggieDave 6 #7 March 5, 2002 Go talk to the advisers for each one of those majors. See if you can find anyone in those majors or that used to be in those majors and ask them about it. When I first went to college I was a Computer Science major, since I'm a computer geek, but I hated the major. So I was a Speech Communications major, didn't really enjoy that either, now I'm a History major and I'm really enjoying that. "Give me one ping and one ping only..." skyhawk 2 #9 March 7, 2002 ok update over here especially where i live eveyone wants you to have a uni degree as i said they dont really care what it is they just want it. Youth employment around here is really shit and no offence to anyone but i dont wanna be worken in walmart when im 30. The courses are teach yourself type so basicly i can work full time go home and study the stuff and write the assignments and shit. when it comes down to it i will leave ahead of the other students because not only will i have had gotten a Bachelor but i will of also been in the full time work force for all that time.my plan now is get a full time job in like a retail store or somthen get a Bachelor of Business at nights and weekends also because of the way it is the courses are unit based and alot of them cross over so by doing the Bachelor of Business i will have taken out about 10 or more units of other ones.In 5 years i will have 5 Bachelors 5 yrs of full time work and part of my helicopter licence then im gunno go get a high payen job at a big Business and make a shitload of money :) the only thing you learn at school is to memorize
lazerq3 0 #10 March 7, 2002 QuoteIn 5 years i will have 5 Bachelors No offense but 5 BA's in 5 yrs?........kinda sounds like this college is to degrees as Mcdonalds is to hamburgers.... I know in your previous post you said it isnt a pay 100$ and get a degree ....but it sure sounds that way!!! BUt hey do what you gotta do!!!jason
Kris 0 #11 March 7, 2002 You might want to check their accreditations. 2-3 BA's in 5 years is really pushing it. In all actuality, you would be better off getting your Master's in one discipline than getting 5 BA's. Some employers may see you as a career student with no real-world skills. Sad, but true.Kris
SpeedRacer 1 #12 March 7, 2002 QuoteYou might want to check their accreditations definitely!! don't get screwed by a non-accredited correspondence college.Speed Racer"Fill your hand, you son-of-a-bitch!"
AggieDave 6 #13 March 7, 2002 QuoteIn 5 years i will have 5 Bachelors Around here its generally about 5 years to get 1 degree. Most don't do it in 4 anymore, probably 75% or more take 4.5 - 5 years. Remember, where you went to school makes a difference sometimes, an engineer with a degree from MIT will be looked upon higher then an engineer from BFE University in Bumsville, Idaho, ya know? (sorry to everyone in Bumsville, Idaho, you get a bad wrap, I've never met anyone from there I didn't like, its just that the name of your town sounds so damn funny...) skyhawk 2 #14 March 7, 2002 no it is run by the profeshional places i.e the big australian universitys your not meant to do 5 degrees :) its more the fact that 4 of them are business based so different parts (units) are already done in another one and the 5th one (criminal one) you have to major in something else as well so just by doing the business one i will have done that bit. It is fully legit just alot of hard work on my part www.ola.edu.au5 in 5 years is probably pushing it a bit but 4 of them can be done over a ten year period so if im running abit behind it doesnt really matter.the only thing you learn at school is to memorize

Sinkster 0 #16 March 7, 2002 I am going to have to take issue with your assertion that "the only thing you learn at school is to memorize."For some people this may certainly be the case, however any University worth it's salt will sharpen your mind and intellect to the degree that you learn how to think with supreme clarity such that you gain an understanding of the nature of the world and ideas that is irreplaceable. The point of a university is to learn not only from a selected area such as computer science but also to gain knowledge of the arts, humanities, literature, philosophy, and other liberal arts. In other words, universities are not trade schools where you learn some simple task that has no apparent application outside of itself. You learn how to be a well rounded individual and these skills do travel with you the rest of your life. I can tell, for example, that my ability to reason has been sharpened by the study of philosophy which has consequently augmented my ability to develop software for computer systems even though those things are not seemingly related. However, even if these were not the case I would not trade my education for anything, not even any amount of money.Truly you are right in the sense that the classes that are worthless are the ones where you simply assimilate and regurgiate data (memorize). Of course memorization is often a part of most classes in some form or another. But memorization is only a means not an ends in most cases. Any monkey or computer can regurgitate data--it is a trivial task. What makes us human is rather our ability to reason. Why do you think the best candidates for law school (according to GRE scores) are Philosophy graduates? Because they learn how to think, not memorize. (although lawyers can be so evil! ;-) )In any case, I hope you get my point and decide to try to get the most of your university experience because it will positively affect every aspect of your life. Not only will it help you earn more money (which is unfortunately why most people get an education to the detriment of many universities), but it will enhance your life in ways you can't even imagine because you will be able to better appreciate beauty and the arts and literature, or judge the soundness of moral and scientific claims, and highten your sensibilities to be more deeply satisfied than previously possible. It will even change the way you hold a girls hand. Therefore, I compel anyone contemplating higher education who has any amount of passion for it to take the plunge whatever the cost. It is worth it and it will change who you are.Blue skies,Sinkster"Better Socrates dissatisfied than a pig satisfied."P.S. This is not meant as a personal attack but rather to compel people think about education in a different way so please do not be offended. Many people feel the same way about school that you do and for good reason because most schools are horribly deficient when it comes to providing a real education--so I don't blame you. I also realize that there is much more to life than just "learning", and that some things (like skydiving) cannot possibly be understood without experiencing them. Sinkster 0 #17 March 7, 2002 BTW, I need to say something just because this is my first post here.I don't mean to come off like some pompous a-hole (if it seems like that) who is trying to wield his 'education' as a weapon to make myself feel better or promote any kind of superiority. I'm just used to writing like that.Anyways, it's unfortunate that so many so-called educated people do that because it makes anyone who posts with a similar flavor seem to be of the same ilk. So feel free to take issue with anything and know that I will try not to be a snob about it. We are definately all subject to the same frail human nature!-SinksterP.S. For you psych people out there I know you are thinking that I am projecting my own snobbishness out by writing this criticism of it on my own post but I assure you thats not the case here. :-) Of course, how can I really know because it would be subconscious so I guess I'm stuck (lol) but at least I can say that I am trying to be as sincere as my nature will consciously allow. I would give anything to be able to divine the true intent of my heart but alas that is just not possible!!!!lol
Sinkster 0 #18 March 7, 2002 Also I just want to say that for anyone who is still young that at your age fortunes can be lost and soulmates taken away. But you can always get those back. What you cannot get back is TIME! So please make the best of your time! Take any risk to pursue your dreams whatever it is. Seek knowledge. Take chances. Put it all on the line for your dreams if need be. I applaud everyone seeking to better themselves in any way! You only get so much time so make the best of it, BUT do live with no regrets because obviously you can only make the best of the moment you are living in RIGHT NOW so there is no point in fretting over the past so don't or I will have to hurt you. :-) (I know I have regretted so many things but I still have right now! yahoo! hehe)I think this ties in perfectly with the skydiving philosophy which I define as follows: "living your life to the fullest every day--whatever that may be and at whatever cost."For some skydiving may not be living to the fullest but in any case go for it whatever it is! :-)Thanks for listening. PhillyKev 0 #21 March 7, 2002 QuoteI am going to have to take issue with your assertion that "the only thing you learn at school is to memorize."Have to agree strongly with your issue taking. Personally, I didn't go to college, went to tech school. But I also did that at 26 after having worked in various fields, managing a small business, and getting my real estate and insurance licenses, being involved in the Chamber of Commerce and other associations, etc. In other words, a lot of life experience/business experience. That combined with what I learned at tech school (and taught myself) has allowed me to excel in my career. However if you're lucky enough to not be a total screw off, as I was, when you're younger. And can go to a University full time, the total sum of the experiences and knowledge from that will help you to excel. On the other side, I see tons of guys who have no motivation, worked crap jobs and then when computers were booming decided to go to tech school because of all the $$$. These are the guys that are now out of work and unable to find a new job. While the ones who actually enjoy the work, apply themselves, and have the ability to adapt switched gears from ecommerce to security, disaster recovery, and business continuity, which are where all the IT money is being spent these days (and trust me, there's still plenty of it flowing).cielos azules y cerveza fría-Kevin

PhreeZone 20 #23 March 7, 2002 All I can say about that is RIGHT ON BROTHER!!!I went to a university that most people consider a joke (you've had to see thier commercials nationwide...), but I came out with more practical experience then 98% of grads do in Computer Science. Even in the IT crash everyone of my friends got hired before graduation in the IT field. I was able to get the job I wanted, not one that was the only thing around. I can and do code, networking, DR and continunity, security, project planning and management, accounting, and communicate in any media needed. My friends that went to another school came out knowing 2 or maybe 3 languages and a few specialized things. I had to learn 8 languages, 3 OS's (Unix,MVS, Windows SDK), graphic design and more about project management then I wanted to know. Common practice at school was giving us a speech assignment with 24 hours notice on a new topic and we had to do a 20 minute presentation to the Deans and professors the next day, every other week. We were not told the topic or what media we had to do it in till that 24 hour mark. My personal favorite was when we had to do a teach the class exercise. The deans had to be taught a new phyical skill or activity. We had to bring the materials to school to deminstrate then lead the deans in the activity. Others in my class did stuff like flyfishing, climbing or firebreathing (VERY COOL!). I tought them how to Pro-pack Even the places that are considered to be jokes do not take the responcibilty of teaching and educating lightly.....Cause I don't wanna come back down from this cloud... ~ Bush
