Trouble with roomates

Recommended Posts

I have this room mate who moved out a while back. We had an agreement that I would pay 20 dollars more than him for a room since it was bigger everything was fine. Now he no longer lives in the apartment he gave it to his brother and stopped paying rent his father now pays it. He wants me to cover his 20 dollars for the rent because we had an agreement. This bastard is only sending checks for his share -20. I am pissed and seeking legal counsel.

i don't understand... are you complaining about not getting the $20?
If the rent comes on time (even if it's $20 short in your eyes) it's a good roommate, don't bitch :D
Never argue with stupid people. They just drag you down 2 their level & beat you with experience

$20 a month isnt all that bad to be missing out. As long as he pays within the deadline thats the most important part. Every roomate ive had always waited til the night before the late fine would be imposed. A tennant that rents a house from me never pays on time. Roomates are hard to deal with but they make the rent a hell of a lot cheaper.

I hope you made him sign an agreement. Never share an apartment with someone if you don't have something in writing. I know too many people who got screwed, even by supposed friends. If you don't have a written agreement, make him sign one or tell him to get out and find someone else. Of course since you don't have one already, you can't really kick him out, since it is legally his home and unless you can prove that he is breaking an agreement, he has as much right to live there as you do even if yours is the only name on the lease.

Get your $20 worth in other ways:
1) Buy a Slim Whitman CD and listen to it day and night.
2) Learn opera and practice often
3) Bean Burritos and lots of them
4) Wake him up in the middle of the night saying, "Did you hear that?". Repeat
5) Pets
6) Invite skydivers over for a party
Hell, that might be $22 or $23 worth. You're on your way. ;)
Just take it one day at a time, like the drunks do.

Am I reading this correctly:
- You agree to pay him $20 more than 1/2 the rent because your room is bigger.
- That works fine.
- He moves out, and his brother is now living in his room, and his father is paying the rent.
- Rent is paid on time and is the same amount your ex-roommate had been paying you before.
- You are pissed because they want to keep the same rent split in place?

I am not a cheap person I have enough money to skydive and buy things like my 32" Wega. The point here is a matter of principal. The former room mate no longer lives with me and no linger pays the rent his dad does. You cannot transfer an agreement to another person simply because he is your brother. Why stop there then. You could move some one else you know into the pad and pay for them and his mind the agreement still stands. I am sorry new roomate, new lease there is no new agreement. I will not be paying the upkeep becuase he thinks I am a pushover.

I would think the original agreement was made because it was the *fair thing to do* given the different-sized rooms, and not just because he was your roommate and you were doing him a favor.
How about if you were paying an extra $200 a month instead of $20? Then some new guy moves in, and you tell him, well, the guy before you was paying $300 and I was paying $700, but I think I'll charge you $500 and knock my own rent down to the same thing, because hey, I don't know you.... BTW, enjoy your smaller room....
It seems to me like the only relevant question here is, is the FAIR thing for one person to pay more rent than the other. If so, I gotta admit I don't understand why you're pissed about them wanting to keep the rent the same. But everyone sees things differently....

I guess I should follow up on that last post We had another agreement when we moved in that whoever has more things for the apartment gets the larger room. Thatbeing me since I own everything except fot the couches I took the larger room. He didn't like that and began to complain about how small it was and how he was going to move into my room because his was to small. I agreed to pay for the room to shut him up and now that he is gone and the new room mate has no issues with the room I don't see how it is unfair to charge the 20 dollar difference.
let me remind you that my new roomate does not
A) pay for anything him self>> bills included
B) clean up the apartmnet
C) Pay for any groceries

The situation seems more than fair for me.

Your so right skybytch, BUT I have to put up with this until the lease expires. Belive me when I saw that when I move next it will be in a single bedroom unless my GF wants to move in with me by that time and even then this has ruined the togetherness for me for a while.

Easiest way to solve this problem is to live alone.

Truer words were never spoken.
Then you get married and have never-ending "roommate" problems.
"Why can't you put the laundry in the hamper?"
"Why can't you put the dishes in the sink?"
"Why can't you put things back where you got them?"
"Why can't you make the bed in the morning?"
Etc., etc.
Of course, the answer to all of those questions and more is "Becuase I am a guy." :)You'd never know I actually love my wife. :D

Well in that case, take what flyhi said and add -
1) Stop buying groceries. Eat out. (nothing pisses me off more than someone who eats all the food and never buys any)
2) Veggie Tales CD's on the stereo. Loud. Late.
:)pull and flare,

Who does he think you are , his Mother/father.
I would sit him down and explain to him that since he is no loger living at home he is responsible for his share of bills, that he buys his own groceries and looks after the place.
I don't see why you should pay his bills and look after him like you do.
If he doesn't like it then tell him to pack his bags and get another room mate who knows how to look after themself.
I'm sure you've got better things to do than shop and clean up after this guy.

Now you see why I am mad. His dad pays for his rent and told him to move in here becuase he wouldn't have to pay I can't kick him out since the checks are comming in even if they are short the correct amount. I talked to him yesterday
" If you don't want to make up the difference in rent that is fine, if you don't want to pay for groceries that is fine, cleaning, or laundry fine. But don't expect to use my computer, TV, DVD, or surround sound system"
His reply
"I need e-mail to run my business. My dad told me I could move in here"
