GrumpySmurf 0 #26 March 8, 2002 QuoteUnfortunately (or rather fortunately) there's not enough real world data to show one way or the other which choice is the best.Best choice: stay on the ground and drink beer. QuoteThat note about the AAD was just a tack on to the end. Well if you take that line out, I have nothing to disagree with and what fun would that be? I wasn't quoting you as to saying, "I don't need an RSL, I got an AAD" - though the comment did lean towards that statement - I actually had someone say that to me once. Scary thought, huh? Just posing hypotheticals where the AAD won't help but the RSL might - low cutaways, which can be avoided with altogether with, "Pull high, cutaway quick and avoid other canopies below 1,000." I guess I'm of the opinion that if you need to worry about disconnect an RSL, you bigger issues to worry about - like that highly loaded main you're now playing with, that's more likely to mess you up in the last 20 feet than the RSL at 3K. Maybe they should make intentional cutaways manditory for the 'D' or something - at least then you know you can get the silver quick.

Iflyme 0 #28 March 9, 2002 I'll consider disconnecting my RSL after I have had my first malfunction ... although I'm confident I'll pull both handles, I just am not willing to fly without an RSL yet (at about 130 jumps).
Zennie 0 #29 March 9, 2002 As soon as I got off student status I unhooked it.There are just too many situations where if you have one, you have to remember to unhook it.If I don't have one, I just have to remember one thing... if I pull the red pillow, pull the silver handle. And if I forget to pull the silver handle... then I guess Darwin was right. "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense." Iflyme 0 #31 March 9, 2002 QuoteAnd if I forget to pull the silver handle... then I guess Darwin was right. Well the why does anyone have an RSL? Too many people die cutting away without getting their reserve out -- not me! (I hope) Anyway, I'm sure people have gone looking for the silver handle when they needed it, but spent the rest of their life trying to find it because their harness shifted, or something of the sort ... I just feel a tiny bit safer knowing that I have a backup system in place that MAY help me when I need it the most!"Men weren't meant to rideWith clouds between their knees"Five For Fighting
Zennie 0 #32 March 9, 2002 Hey Frank,This isn't a subject I've taken lightly.I honestly think that an RSL would cause me more problems than it would solve. That's why I don't have one.I know many disagree on this, but this is my choice and I will either live or die with it. I personally think my odds of living with it are pretty good. Thus my decision. YMMV. "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."
Iflyme 0 #33 March 9, 2002 Quotebut this is my choice Zennie, you have made an informed decision, and that is the best thing any of can possibly do! I will not question your choice. I know you are the type of person to fully study all the information available before making any decision. I can only defend the choice I have made -- which was also carefully considered. I just hope everyone else gives due consideration to this matter before deciding for themselves, rather than taking a "monkey see monkey do" approach."Men weren't meant to rideWith clouds between their knees"Five For Fighting
Brokeneagle 0 #34 March 10, 2002 I have one, but my RSL has been removed; if I need it, I want the time to get clear of crap before I fire my reserve.Brokeneagle. I'm really very gentle, no matter what my kung-fu teacher says...
