Slappie 9 #1 March 14, 2002 [gets on soap box] Ok, since the US Gov decided to repeal the law of speed limits of 55mph on the highways. Everything was great. Now in Texas the State Leg. has decided that Harris County [the county Houston is in} and 8 surrounding countties have got to post the limits back to 55mph!! They say this is because of polution and it's going to help clear the air in Houston! I CALL BULLSHIT! If these fuckers would put more restrictions on the major refineries in the area and actually POLICE them the air in Houston wouldn't be so bad...How many other cities in the US either have started to go back to a 55mph speed limit or never changed to the higher speed limits of 65-70??I'm pissed off that it's us the working people and the drivers in this county and others that are being slapped across the face saying that because we drive we caused all the pollution in the city... There has to be some other way to lower the emissions other then to slave the driving community in this are to an unsafe speed of 55... It's impossible to get anywhere at this rediculice speed of 55!!! My spelling isn't the greatest but you can understand what I'm saying...*cranks up Sammy Hagar "I can't Drive 55" !!!!!!!!!!!!![/off the soap box]My New Website with 24hr Chat
indyz 1 #2 March 14, 2002 Illinois is 65 throughout the state, and 55 is pretty popular around Chicago. Of course, if you actually go 55, everybody else who is doing 85-95 in the slow lane will run you off the road, so I guess it works out in the end.--BrianHomepageAIM: suprmath
ChromeBoy 0 #3 March 14, 2002 Virginia has a LAW that you can not use radar detectors. You get an expensive ticket if you get caught using one. Coming into the state there are signs everywhere sayingNO RADAR DETECTORSFlying in a Blue Dream
Slappie 9 #4 March 14, 2002 My whole point is tho, the limits were raised from 55 to 65 in the city and 70-75 out on the open highways surrounding the city... now they have lowered all the limits back to 55 and are ENFORCING these limits like some Nazi Bastards!! I am not saying I drive the limit but I like to stay within 10mph over the limit... This is just a slap to the drivers, we are being punished because the fucks in Austin have no backbone and wont stand up to big biz and crack down on the pollution streaming from the chemical plants & oil refineries in the surrounding area!! So we the drivers have to pay with increased accidents, slower traffic, headaches and increased city revinue due to speeding tickets... IT IS TOTAL BULLSHIT!My New Website with 24hr Chat

skycat 0 #7 March 14, 2002 Actually if they got their ass in gear with some public transport like the light rail that they are "building" I would sure as hell use it over driving. I mean it's an hr and a half drive down to Derek's which is ~70 miles from my house. I would much rather hop a light rail in the woodlands to downtown than downtown to clear lake and have him pick me up down there. Heck as long as that trip cost less than $10 one way I'd be saving money just on gas alone. I know a ton of people in the woodlands that would use it, especially if you see the amount of people the woodlands transit takes downtown every day for $7 one way, plus the hours are very limited on that bus, and well it's a bus..I would much rather take a train. flyingferret 0 #8 March 14, 2002 Hey Slappie,I agree with you. I cannot see it from the polution standpoint, although from safety, that makes more sense. Get ready for it, because I think there are already some preliminary studies that say fatalies are up since the increase in speed limit. In my opinion, the need to get rid of stupid ass drivers. And as much as I like Texas, we have a LOT of them. Some people can drive way above the speed limit, others can hardly drive 45 safely. That is problem, stupid people. I feel very comfortable handling my car at 90 or 100. But that requires visual scanning, alertness, etc. And you can never predict that one asshole that over reacts and does something stupid. That is why they lower the speed limits, if everyone goes slower there is more reaction time. At least in theory, but then people get impatient and just ride closer. So, yeah it is pretty f*cked.Other places are better, I was pretty impressed with the driving in both Cali, and Illinois. California everyone gets on the highway, it is anarchy for about 30 seconds, and then everything is screaming. 80 or 90 seems to be standard. Plus they have all kinds of rules, cops cannot run radar while moving, they cannot run radar without posted signs, they have to do studies for months on the topology of a location before they can depend upon radar readings from that sight, motorcycles are allowe to go between lanes, if the traffic is standing still. So, cool stuff, but a lot of other uncool stuf in Cali, so you take what you can I guess. But anyway, all that rambling if from a safety standpoint, as for lowering it because of pollution, not sure I buy that.Malachi

wingnut 0 #10 March 14, 2002 slappie, how ya think`ii felt after living in germany where i could go 120mph most places then coming back to the u.s where it's half that........ i feel for ya dude... i know my foot naturally rests at 85 in most cars so i have a hard time...thank god for cruis control......"i may not go to heven, i hope you go to hell"-C.C. GrumpySmurf 0 #11 March 14, 2002 That's cuz if you did 120 mph in the US with the roads in such crappy condition as they are, you become airborne

Sebazz1 2 #13 March 14, 2002 Actually the higher the RPM's a car runs the cleaner the smog emissions. So the lowering of the speed limit would not help in that respect.I also think a slower speed limit would cause more accidents........just my .02.........Sebazz............ SkydiveMonkey 0 #14 March 14, 2002 Get a GPS 'radar' detector - as they work off a GPS and a database of known speed sensor locations, they're legal. So far anyways. One tequila, two tequila, three tequila floor

skycat 0 #20 March 14, 2002 Actually you know my car (Mustang GT with a V8) uses more gas at 55 than 65. At 55 it doesn't run very well in 5th gear cause the RPMs are so low, and well in 4th they are really high....when I had my intake manifold replaced they set the mixture to run on the lean side, I get great gas milage now, something like 25 miles to the gallon, but the down side is it doesn't like low RPMs very much.....so guess who is going to be speeding alot.
Sebazz1 2 #21 March 14, 2002 When you get pulled over just say you didn't want to F**k up the environment. But it is true about the RPM thing. I took my car to get smogged and it was idleing a little high and the guy told me to fix it before I could get smogged. Said it was too clean at high RPM's. Do you have to get your car smogged in Texas? Are you as strict about smog emissions a swe are in Cali. Sebazz............

GrumpySmurf 0 #23 March 14, 2002 Try doing 110 in 3rd if you want to see gas mileage shot to hell - my mileage went from miles/gallon to gallons/mile. So does the 'Stang have to use 87, 90 or 93 octane?
skycat 0 #24 March 14, 2002 It doesn't say anything in my owners manual or in the car just that it has to be unleaded, I normally put 93 in, but a last year when gas was outrageous I put 87 in. Couldn't really tell the difference other than a small difference in gas milage. From what I've heard 90 is pretty much worthless and you can't tell any difference between it and 87. We do have immisions testing here, but I'm pretty sure it's not as strict as CA.
