Oh yea. I forgot to add that I hate Compaqs, just a little more than those Packard Bell paperweights. :)Compaq keyboards are better than Dell ones though.
If it weren't for the warranty that Dell gives, I would say build your own or buy a generic one.

And you've hit rock bottom when you buy an Apple.

Well, aren't they all called Macs now? But don't be too harsh, Macs are fun to play with. They aren't really good for anything, but they're cute. That's all that really matters right? ;)

Packard-Bell is no longer making machines, and neither is Compaq.

If I 'member - NEC bought/merged with Packard Hell - haven't heard much out of either since.
HP's desktops suck. Compaq desktops sucks. Guess what - HP and Compaq might merge. They do both make decent servers though.
Ill agree with Andyman - Dell's workstations are great, their servers don't suck, but their laptops aren't the best. On the upside, their service is top-notch, so when that laptop breaks it's usually fixed pretty quick.
Never argue with stupid people. They just drag you down 2 their level & beat you with experience

To build on my "no self-build" statement, last year, I built one for my parents and it has been nothing but headaches. I built the whole thing in about 5 hrs and then installed the OS and then it went to shit quick. I just dont know what to get and what works well together.
I have put more hours into that thing than I care to admit and wish I would have just got them a Dell. Oh well, next time I'll know.
-------------
I saw that system, and even had my fingers in it for a while (I am a professional geek). it did have some flakyness..
As for Dell, Just get an on-site warranty, otherwise, they suck. had a client buy one against my recommendations, and the NIC was DOA. they wanted us to send it back to them for 14 days so they could fix it. They refused to send the part. I ended up installing a new NIC as it would be cheaper (time is money).
Let me know what you want and I can build one for ya...

Macs are good for, among other things: Word processing, web browing, graphics, audio, and video. They are just a good as, if not better, than Wintel machines at almost everything except for games, and they are catching up there.
From a support side, they seem to break less than Wintel hardware. The newer tower models are a complete joy to maintain; 30 seconds from power down to power up for a memory upgrade. They can be set up for a network in less than a minute by an 8 year old or an 80 year old.
If I had to recommend a new computer for my parents or my grandmother, it would be a Mac. Power Mac G4 (Faster) for my parents, new iMac (Combo Drive) for Grandma. For the average light use home user, the new iMacs are the best thing going right now.

Just ordered parts to upgrade mine. Going from a pentium 2 350 to an athlon 1700. 192 megs of ram to 512 megs. Cost including shipping is about $450 from http://htt://www.mwave.com. I've heard from 2 friends that it's a reliable company that makes good stuff. They sell parts, barebones systems, and complete custom systems. I'll let you know how it all works when the parts arrive. Ya might even get faster downloads from my server (ok, probably not...but it wont slow down my computer as much anyway).

- Lan Card has it's own processor also
- 120mb superdisk
- 25gb 7200rpm hd internal
- 40gb 7200rpm hd internal
- 60gb 5400rpm USB external hd

I haven't had any problems.. I'd prefer an AMD though.. They clock faster than Intel.

I know macs are supercomputers.. But I prefer IBM compatibles.. I've done graphics work on macs..
-------------------
They are technically faster than a PC. Macs use what is called a RISC based processor, which stands for Reduced Instruction Set Computing. Basically it takes fewer commands than a PC to do the same job.
That reduction in overhead makes the iMac G4 800mhz perform at the same level as approximately a P3 1600.
They are great graphics machines, but other than graphics/video or office type apps, I wouldnt recommend them.
PC is still the way to go for overall useablilty. I liken it to the difference between a leatherman tool (pc)and a power screwdriver (mac). Sure, the leatherman pretty much does it all, but at the expense of not doing everything the best. However, if you are gonna turn screws (graphics stuff) all day and nothing more, buy the power screwdriver (mac). its more efficient. If you need to have pliers(games), a hammer (custom written apps for business), and generally use it for other things, go for the multi-purpose tool (pc).

Yes and no.
You will be able to listen to mp3, watch movies in many formats, surf the web with Konq, Mozilla or, my favorite Opera, read mail with Kmail and write letters with Koffice or Staroffice. The problem is reading .doc (and other MsOffice formats) files since MS is changing the format with every release of Office. (IMHO no USEFULL features have been added to Word since -95.)
Both Staroffice and Koffice can read .doc, just not as well as MSWord (I refuse to write M$haft).
---------------------
SUN and the opensource community have come a LONG way. Staroffice6 (released soon, reasonably priced) and Openoffice.org (currently out, FREE) both do pretty much everything mickeysoft office will do(minus most of the fancy wizards), including reading/writing office 97-XP docs.
Its still not ready for main stream use IMHO, but I am looking forward to SO6, as that might just make some headway in the useability dept.
