"Identify that Historical Quote" Contest

Recommended Posts

Okay. Billvon's thread got me inspired in a weird sort of way. All the discussion about war, patriotism, government and revolution got a little heavy on the rhetoric. So I wondered who can name the people that made the following quotes. It is a long list, and some of them will probably surprise you. I'll post the full list with attribution on Monday. Throw your answers out if you want. If nothing else, we'll all learn something....
Who Said What?
Dictators ride to and fro upon tigers which they dare not dismount. And the tigers are getting hungry.
You must be the change you wish to see in the world.
The leader of genius must have the ability to make different opponents appear as if they belonged to one category.
We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.
From each, according to his ability; to each, according to his need.
The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.
The Constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.
Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.
Justice is incidental to law and order.
Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac.
Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.
It is much more secure to be feared than to be loved.
We would like to live as we once lived, but history will not permit it.
Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names.
Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind.
Leadership is a combination of strategy and character. If you must be without one, be without the strategy.
One death is a tragedy. A million deaths is a statistic.
Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.
You can never get all the facts from just one newspaper, and unless you have all the facts, you cannot make proper judgements about what is going on.
Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action.
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.
The way to win an atomic war is to make certain it never starts.
Wars have never hurt anybody except the people who die.
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
The victor will never be asked if he told the truth.
The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.
What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world.
It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets.

Who said what? (the PTiger edition)
First a couple funny ones that probably no one will get.
(the l33t h4X0r in me loves this one):
"They have computers, and they may have other weapons of mass destruction."
"As God once said, and I think rightly..."
"The French people are incapable of regicide."
"The Army is the Indian's best friend."
Now for the real stuff:
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
"As long as men worship the Caesars and Napoleons, the Caesars and Napoleons will duly rise and make them miserable."
"Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself."
"Don't let your sense of morals keep you from doing what is right."
"Boundary: (noun) In political geography, an imaginary line between two nations, separating the imaginary rights of one from the imaginary rights of another."
"Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."
"It is easier to fight for one's principles than to live up to them."
"It is dangerous to be right when the government is wrong."
"A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices."
"Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so."
"You can discover what your enemy fears most by observing the means he uses to frighten you."

There are a good number of unidentified quotes still there. When I come back on Monday, I hope you haven't let PalmettoTiger clean house. :)[troublemaker] Hmm. So far, all the correct answers have been from people in the midatlantic region. Even on the Robert E. Lee quote. [/troublemaker] :D

Hey now, I'm originally from South Carolina, and I was born and razed, er, raised in a city that Sherman torched. You better not egg us Southerners on, or we're liable to do something self-righteous, shortsighted, and incredibly destructive. ;)

DING DING!! Correct good sir.
Toss out those wild guesses, don't be afraid.
Edit: One more I found. Someone should get this almost immediately. :)"War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend..."
