skycat 0 #4 March 19, 2002 I hate to say it guys, but exercise is really the only what to loose weight the right way. Also it doesn't hurt to clean up your diets and eat healthier. I lost 20 lbs a few years ago by doing just that, and I haven't put it back on.

hooked 0 #8 March 19, 2002 Easier said than done, but TRY to eat a lot less than you do now. I have found diets don't really work, long term. I have found that cutting down on the amount of food I do eat, works.J

skycat 0 #11 March 19, 2002 Personally I think most of the diets out there are worthless. It's easier to make small alterations in your diet rather than HUGE changes.Cut out small things like order the grilled chicken instead of the hamburger. Snack on flavored rice cakes instead of chips, try to avoid sweets. Drink diet soda instead of regular, it's better to cut out soda, but that can be done down the road.Keep the changes small and do them over a few weeks to help prevent cravings. Then by adding in exercise you will end up trimming down without cutting out to much.Btw....by exercising it does not mean you will lose weight, you may actually gain it at first or for a while not seem to be doing anything, a better guide is to take measurements of your problem areas such as your waist, hips legs arms then compare them once a week. Using that as your goal. I know a guy who lost over 100 lbs and use a pair of pants as his goal, for every goal he reached he went out and bought a pair of pants that was 1 or 2 sizes smaller, and that was his new goal, he went from a 48? to currently a 36 inch waist. skycat 0 #13 March 19, 2002 Actually he started biking every night, going from 5 miles to currently 20 miles. Very aggressively changed his diet to a low fat one, and really counted his calories. He did have his Dr.'s help on this so he didn't end up harming himself or loosing weight to fast, it did take him about a year to do it.
lummy 4 #14 March 19, 2002 Which would make sense. losing too much wieght at once is just as unhealthy from what I hear. As for me, I've been complaining about not having my truck, but it's a dang good reason to HAVE to ride my bike. Maybe I'll just hold off on putting that engine in :)I'm not talking about your pig tails, I'm talking about your sex appeal.... hit the road and I'm gone.... AggieDave 6 #18 March 19, 2002 QuoteSnack on flavored rice cakes instead of chips, try to avoid sweets. That's not very good advice, actually. You have to look at the GI of the food, rice cakes are horrible, they cause a very bad insulin spike which will cause you to hold fat/slow down your metabalism. Here's what to do: (note, no I am not a licensed professional, but Bodybuilding is a hobby/lifestyle of mine, so I have done my research on this.) 1) Increase the number of meals you eat a day. Let me explain. People eat 2-3 meals a day, which causes your body to go into a bit of a starvation mode between meals. i.e. slowing down your metabalism. Eat 5-6 meals a day, smaller, healthier meals. Here's a good example of breakfast and the second meal: 3 egg whites, orange juice, a light begel with non-fat cream cheese. Meal two: Drink a MRP or have a protein shake.A MRP is a Meal Replacement Powder. There are several available, the ESP verison is very good, there are other great ones too.2) Cardio. Do it. Try starting with 30 minutes a day 3 days a week at 70% of your max. Do know what 70% of your max, you can find on the web what the max heart rate is according to your age/weight. Once you get in the swing of things you can increase to more times a week.3) Start lifting weights. No, you don't have to go hard core with the very big free weights. You really should use free wieghts, most machines isolate a muscle group too much to do a lot of good for beginners. If you're uncomfortable going into the gym and going at it, see if they have personal trainers to help you design a workout and show you how to properly do each excersie. You CAN seriously hurt yourself if you do excersises improperly. Also, everything you hear from different sources, use some common sense and get other opinions, not all info is safe. i.e. The shoulder presses that were demonstrated in the Feb Parachutist calls for you to do a supinated press and twist your arms out during the press. That is very very bad for your rotocuff, it *will* mess up your shoulders eventually.4) Take a picture of yourself or get someone else to do it. Ladies do it in a swim suit, guys in shorts with out a shirt. This will give you a starting point, put the picture up where you WILL see it every single day. Like on your refrigerator door and on your bathroom mirror. This will help motivate you.5) Figure out your goals, specifically. If you say you want to put on muscle AND loose weight, you've pretty much stated comflicting goals. Plan something resonable and work hard for it. Instead of saying saying you'd like to loose 10lbs, say you'll loose 5% body fat. That is a better goal, since weight doesn't matter as much as your body fat percentage.6) Educate yourself. Go get some quality info. Much of what Joe Weider produces is quality information, "Muscle and Fitness," "Flex" and "Muscle Media" are pretty good magazines. Stay away from stuff like "Weight Lifting for Dummies" a lot of the information presented in that book isn't very accurate. If you want some more information or have specific questions, etc, let me know. I'll be more then happy to see what I can do to help you out."I don't want to destroy your sweater, lets be friends and just walk away..."
skymama 37 #19 March 20, 2002 Ok, I'll throw in what worked for me. I had a 50 pound loss over a year ago, which was my goal, and now I've lost 12 more without even trying. You have to remember that 3500 calories= a pound. It's simple science...eat less and you'll lose weight. There are some things I refused to give up- chocolate and alcohol. Plus, I read that carbs break down into sugar, and that sends a signal to your brain that you want to eat, even if you're not hungry. So, I cut back on carbs, and ate more proteins. Sure enough, I am able to go much longer during the day without getting the munchies. Here's a typical day:breakfast: eggs with turkey ham and cheese, juice and coffee.lunch: huge salad with string cheese and tuna or chicken in it, dressing, and always some chocolate for dessert.mid-day snack: whatever I feel like, just not very much of it.dinner: whatever I'm having with the kids, but I have smaller portions than I used to. I usually follow this up with chocolate too!I drink more water than I used to, but I still drink diet coke and of course beer. Oh, and I don't exercise either, but I know I should. If you feel yourself going for some food and your stomach isn't growling, ask yourself why you are eating. Usually it's an emotional reason. Drink some water or pop a mint and put your mind on something else, and the feeling will usually pass.AndreaThe brave may not live forever, but the timid may not live at all. TEB6363 0 #20 March 20, 2002 Yep, I did the same type of program that AggieDave is talking about. I lost about 65 lbs last year. Then I quit chewing tobacco. I got 15 lbs back. I still have to loose another 6 lbs to get back to my goal.I just got back from my afternoon walk, I have already eaten 3 meals today and have two more to go. Tonight will be at least 35 minutes on the eliptical runner. I just have to keep those cravings down for another month or so and I should be golden.:::OK, Canopy is Open, No Traffic Around, .. AndyMan 7 #21 March 20, 2002 QuoteOk, I'll throw in what worked for me. I had a 50 pound loss over a year ago, which was my goal, and now I've lost 12 more without even trying.Cool Skymama, that rocks.I lost 80 pounds about three years ago. I've kept it all off, too. There were two parts to my weight loss, the first was seeing a motivational speaker. Yeah, I know. This part sounds cheezy, but I'm sure anybody who'se EVER tried to lose weight knows the hardest part was keeping motivated through the process. The guy I was seeing reminded me every saturday morning of What I was trying to do, How I was trying to do it, and When I knew I had done it. It's a lot easier to stay focused when you've got someone reminding you these things. The second part was simply eating healthy. To me, "eating helthy" meant the following:Fat: Fat was the killer ingredient. Cut out all fat, then add it selectively where you need it. No more then two tablespoons of oil per day. Substitute quantities for other forms of fat. Simple idea: eat fat stay fat.Carbs: Concentrate on whole grain carbs. This means brown rice, whole wheat bread, etc. Processed carbs are almost identical to sugar. Even after concentrating on whole grains, moderate the amount. Small quantities matter here.Protien: protein in and of itself is great, but if frequently comes with fat. Consider any fat part of the above limitations - this pretty much means you chose to eat your protein in a manner that has NO fat. This really isn't that hard, turkey, chicken, and beef tenderloin, all have very little fat... Bacon has lots... Skip the bacon, have an extra egg.Vegetables: unlimited. Count any salad dressings under the fat limitations above. Use vegetables to fill the gap if you're used to larger meals.A daily diet would go something like this:Breakfast: two poached eggs, 2/3 cup corn flakes (one sugested serving), and a quarter cut skim milk.Lunch: huge salad, a few slices turkey with mustard, 2 beers.Dinner: chicken breast, 1/4 cup brown rice and a salad. fat free dressing.I lost these 80 pounds while working for Molson - I drank on average at least two beers a day. A beer has roughly nutritionally equivalent to a bowl of cornflakes or two slices of whole wheat bread. So if you're going to drink beer, you need to cutback on the amount of bread you eat. This is why I never had bread at lunch, because I had beer. This sounds boring, but you learn to make it interesting. For example, whenever I make brown rice it gets mixed with diced mushrooms, onions and tomatoes.Once I had lost the weight, THEN I started exercising, because I didn't want to confused fat loss and muscle gain. I started off with mostly cardio and progresively moved into resistance training - AFTER I LOST THE WEIGHT.Trying to exercise off the weight never works, unless you're going to combine it with a healthy eating habbit. You need to cutback or burn an extra 3500 calories to lose one pound. Running one mile on the treadmill burns about 100 calories. If you think you can lose weight by running, expect to run about 35 miles for each pound you're going to lose. I hope you have a lot of spare time..._AmICQ: 5578907MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfeYahoo IM: ametcalf_1999
AggieDave 6 #22 March 20, 2002 Quotethe first was seeing a motivational speaker. My name is Matt Foley and I am a Motivational Speaker...You can sure as hell loose a lot of weight when you live IN A VAAAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!Yeah, I'm going back on that diet, because the last month of school killed me. I've had no time to really work out and I've gotten really fat (well, I sure as hell feel that way, eitherway). Before that happened I was up to 240lbs, BUT I was at a % that I was happy with.
