PLFXpert 0 #1 March 20, 2002 I just read the Orlando Sentinel article about Skydive Deland. Leave us alone! Crazy pilots? Permanent camp residents? I've been jumping in Deland every weekend for a year now and this is all news to me. It seems to me the city was just looking for someone to pick on. They see the success of a great DZ and think they're entitled to something. Of course I'm biased. It took me a month to get used to the size of the DZ and the skydiving resume's of the skydivers who jump there. However, I love the fact that on any given weekend I can meet skydivers from more than 20 different countries. I can make skydiving friends from all over the world. I know the planes are well-maintenanced and the pilots are experienced with flying skydivers. I know there are many wonderful DZs out there and I've jumped at several of them. I don't see why Skydive Deland has to be under scrutiny for any of its practices. I think Bob has set up a great DZ and has run it well.Leave us alone. That's my two sense.Much love and blue skies,Carrie http://www.geocities.com/skydivegrl20/
GrumpySmurf 0 #2 March 20, 2002 Here I read the title 'Geese' and figured you folk had a flock of Canada Geese start chasing you around the sky under canopy or something - 'The Geese Strike Back'.You meant 'Geez' huh? When you (and I and everyone else here) is the minority, you will be singled out and picked on. The attention is probably because of a single jumper at some point in time got some locals g/f drunk and took her for a 'spin' in his camper and taught her what Ground Rish really is (or is that Head Rush)? The best thing Deland could do is 'open the doors' and make it clear that these are the accusations, this is our response, if you doubt us and want to see for yourself - come on out, we have nothing to hide - we might even convince ya to jump
 skyhawk 2 #3 March 20, 2002 give them a call and tell them you are more than happy to do a free interview from a skydivers point of viewOpinions are like a-holes everyone has one, the only one that does you any good is yours and all that comes out is shit
 PLFXpert 0 #4 March 20, 2002 Yea, I meant "Geez." OopsIt'll all pass over, I'm sure. It just makes me sad b/c I know Bob works hard to keep the planes maintenanced, the pilots in check, the campgrounds and facilities nice and most importantly, the skydivers happy. I'm sure many DZ owners do the same and I know anyone from any of those DZs would be pretty pissed if someone was trying to step on that.Much love and blue skies,Carrie http://www.geocities.com/skydivegrl20/
 skymama 37 #5 March 20, 2002 Hey, it's my fellow freeflin' chicka! I can't tell you how many people have asked me about the article in the paper. The complaints about the rv park just make me laugh. For one thing, the park is at the end of a dirt road near the landing area and runway, and the whole dz is located in an industrial park. How many residents actually go anywhere near the rv park to see it? The only reason they would ever see it is if they were at the airport. The people complaining need to think about how much money Skydive Deland brings to the area, and how many businesses the skydivers support. Except for Stetson University, I can't think of much else that would bring money into that little town. And without the dz, they wouldn't have all the skydiving businesses like PD, Relative Workshop, Jumpshack, and Mirage employing the good people of Deland.AndreaThe brave may not live forever, but the timid may not live at all.
 PLFXpert 0 #6 March 20, 2002 Exactly, Andrea. Not only those factories, but Bob, himself, employs so many skydivers and lets everyone keep a DZ account to act like a checking account which they can deposit their earnings into and withdraw cash if they want to. There are so many skydivers employed by Skydive Deland, just doing odd jobs so they have something to live off of and $$$ to jump. The article stated the "unsightliness" of the RV park. It is surrounded by trees. No-one who isn't at the end of the dirt road at the DZ would ever see it and as far as "unsightly" goes, that is a matter of opinion. The area is very clean. It is not trashed or un-taken care of. Some of the campers/buses are a bit old an ratty but to the people who live in them, they're just fine. How many regualar RV parks turn away business b/c of the "unsightliness" of the trailer? I would imagine, not many.See you Sunday, Andrea. Norm took some great shots and footage this weekend so if we get copies sometime this week, I will bring them on Sunday for you to see. Either way, I'll bring the pictures we already have. Much love and blue skies,Carrie http://www.geocities.com/skydivegrl20/
 mnischalke 0 #7 March 20, 2002 I gotta chime in here.Bob is one of the coolest mo'fo's I have ever met. The guy owns one of the busiest and most successful DZs in the world, yet he genuinely cares about every jumper who comes to Deland and will make time for anyone who wants to talk to him. I went down there for the Search last month. While we were there, he offered up his pool for water training, brought in Mad Dog to teach and even fed us while we were there. To me, that was downright awesome.I hope all this complaining crap just goes away. Without Bob, that airport wouldn't be half of what it is today. Skydive Deland has brought in a lot of businesses, jobs and money to the local community, as well as at least doubling the airtraffic numbers. Those numbers draw in new businesses as well as federal funding.Yeah, there are some shitty looking RVs nestled in the trees, but drive around the other businesses on the airport. Some of those buildings have junkyards out back. Is anyone talking about those places cleaning up? My solution: get a bunch of jumpers to spend a rainy day washing all the crud off the old RVs. Then tell the critics to fuck off.mikeThe Lord giveth and the M-79 taketh away. Welcome to the world of zero slack.
