Vegetarians?

Recommended Posts

PLFXpert,
Thats the kicker, I eat about 400g of protein a day. Do you know how hard that would be to do if I didn't eat meat? It could be done, but all that milk/protein powder would really mess up my digestive system. And I promise you wouldn't want that, especially on the ride to altitude ;):D
I'm willing to bet the reason your Dr. said that is due to how hard it is to get all of the complete amino acids needed for your body to function properly with out actual meat. Yes it can be done, but its hard. Although most of the people that I've ever known that were hard-core vegitarian and the couple real vegans I knew didn't look too healthy, too thin and frail looking.
With that said, I don't eat bacon for breakfast and a hamburger for lunch. It's usually healthy cuts of chicken breast with lunch, mostly eggs (lots of eggs) for breakfast (along w/ some carbs and stuff).
Hunters are very important, with out them in North Texas for example, the deer population would suffer considerably. The deer, if their numbers weren't kept with in certain limits, would be sickly and starved due to the lack of food available, etc. And yes it is "our" fault for having put them in this place in the first place. It is because of development that their natural preditors don't aren't higher in numbers and take care of this themselves. :)I totally respect people who do the Vegetarian or even the Vegan thing. I couldn't do it, I enjoy eating meat too much, and I like leather goods, etc. Although, I understand convictions, I would have a very hard time (I couldn't do it) purchasing or using something made of cat or dog, etc. :)"I don't want to destroy your sweater, lets be friends and just walk away..."

I eat a lot less meat than I used to, and have shifted more from beef toward chicken, but I'll never cut it out completely. Fish and other seafood are good too, but they are a lot more expensive.
My biggest dietary issue right now is trying to eat more freshly-prepared foods, instead of pre-packaged or fast foods. I've actually done pretty well with that. If I make something myself, I can control the ingredients, where you get tons of junk otherwise. I'm no organic-food nut, but I don't like having tons of artificial sweeteners, salt and preservatives in absolutely everything I eat. The homemade stuff also just tastes a lot better.
My $.02 for those that do become vegan/vegetarians, is to work really hard to get all the various elements into your diet. For example, I've known a lot of veggies that could never give blood because they were perpetually anemic.

able to sustain it for a reasonable length of time

Yes been maintaining constant weight, it's tough though. I have to keep an eye on the scale and cut back when it starts going up. It's true that it is easy to put it back on with the protein diets if you just go back to eating whatever you want again. I hate people with high metabolisms. :)Larry

Actually, a 4-day workout plan (don't want to overtrain), lifting heavy, protein shakes(plus a couple other things, nothing illegal) and an absolute crapload of food is the norm for me. For the next few weeks though, I've transisitoned to a much lower carb intake and bumped my cardio way up to drop some of the bad weight gained during mid-terms and Spring Break.

let me start with this statement first:
Vegetarianism allowed me to skydive.
About a year ago I was a heavy heavy smoker and about 40 lbs overweight. To make a really really long story short, I quit smoking and started to gain even more weight. After two weeks of that, I decided I needed to completely change my eating habits as well. I read a book by Dr. Ornish and for the longest time cut out all animal products from my diet, which really made me a vegan. I lost 30 lbs in a year doing that. Naturally it was in combination with a work out schedule. However, I can tell you from my own experience that your diet plays a far bigger part in weight loss than working out does.....
Now, I have a really hard time eating any meat. Basically my body has lost the enzymes it needs to digest meat and meat products. This ensures a night of agony if I eat any meat. Now, from time to time, I will eat seafood and/or chicken. I feel great, the fat stays off my body and I ma at a level where I can actually skydive......
The bonus of this extremely low fat diet is that it does wonders for your heart and vascular system. It is actually prescribed by doctors and recognised by insurance companies as a remedy for angina and other heart related diseases.
I have read research regarding thsi diet and especially regarding high protein low carb diets. Most of them seem to be a fad and change over time. In the end you will always be able to find a doctor who can argue either side. The funny thing was that this lifestyle was developed for heart patients and was found, after teh fact, that it was a great tool for sustained weight loss. I take off the fat, and I greatly reduce the risk of dying from the number one killer in the western world.
Dave, I think that your situation is different as is the situation of most dedicated athletes, weightlifters and the like. You guys at leat burn off the calories and fat consumed. Most people who overload on eggs, meat, chicken etc spend most of their time on the couch. No wonder that american people have never been bigger and fatter than they are now......
just my $0.02....

That goes from everything from fish, to animal derived folic acid, gelatin, etc. right down to the chemicals ingredients.

... and even includes McDonald's french fries. But who would want to eat those anyway... :)"Vindictiveness aside, the matchbook was a decent doubles partner. . ."
