Chicago... Here I Cum...

Recommended Posts

i mean uhh come...
I have just been offered a job in the NW Suburbs of Chicago. I need some advice. If I take the job, I will not be moving until around July. If I can come up with the money would it be better to take my AFF here in Georgia, where I am very comfortable with the gang out at Airsportz, or should I wait until I get to Chicago. I was looking at SDC's AFP program, that sounds like a good program but much more expensive. I am poor white trash, and with the cost of living in Chicago, I am sure I will become poor white "trailer" trash!!! LOL
Anyway, what do you guys think? If I complete AFF before I leave Georgia, would the guys at SDC be helpful with the rest of the jumps to complete my A, or will I have to spend a lot more money anyway.
Somebody, help me, please... What do I do???

Whenever I moved to Florida I completed my AFF in Georgia so I did not have to worry about it when I moved. When I got to the DZ the owner made me complete a jump with him (an Instructor) and he cleared me as ok to jump. That way I was a jumpin fool when I got there and did not have to stress being in a new city, new dz, etc.

While I can't speak for manifest or the instructional staff - the vibe from SDC seems to be that they would fit you in thier program as best they could - I am sure you would not be the first AFF grad/non-A to show up on the doorstep.
Can't hurt to ask, eh?

If you're in the northwest suburbs, you should also look at Chicagoland - http://www.skydive.com - they're in hinckley, it'll save about an hour off your drive to SDC.
Chicagoland's AFF program is traditional AFF, so it'll be cheaper then SDC's. They won't give you as much canopy training, but they also won't put you under a canopy where you NEED that training.
Chicago DZ's all have bustling trailer parks onsite, so just live at the DZ! :P

Personally, I'd save up the $$$ to finish training at the DZ I plan to jump at in the future.
As a student, you meet a bunch of people you probably wouldn't have any other reason to talk to. If you finish your AFF in GA, you will probably develop friendships with people you may see once or twice a year after you move, if that. If you finish it at a new DZ, you'll be able to foster new relationships with people you'll jump with every weekend.
Then again, I found out I was an introvert yesterday.
Good luck,
mike

i just checked out hinckley's site, that should be less than an hour from schaumburg, unless my map skills have declined. that would be great, i am not big on getting up at 6:00 a.m. and driving for 2 1/2 hours to reach my destination by 9:00
so how are the people out at hinckley? is everyone going to abuse me due to a southen draw... i just love it when people say things like... "say that again... or, how do you say ___ ?"

The program at Skydive Chicago is set up to get you to your A license. The feeling is that you are not given enough training with just 7 levels. Many DZs have accepted that feeling. But they don't include the costs of the coach jumps after AFF level 7 in the price they advertise. SDC puts it all up front. You see exactly what you are being charged throughout your training.
You get every student training jump videoed and dubbed to a tape on every jump. You keep the tape and watch it as much as you want.
You get advanced canopy training because why should you be a student twice? Why learn on one set of equipement and canopy and then have to re-learn emergency procedures and canopy control when you buy your own gear?
The landing area at SDC is 200 acres.
You will not be turned away for training at another DZ. You will be incorporated into the program at SDC if you come there without an A license. So, my suggestion would be that if you train in GA then jump until you have your A license. It will be easier on you IMO.
You also have the option of 5 turbine DZs in the Chicago area:
Skydive Chicago in Ottawa, IL
Skydive Illinois in Morris, IL
Chicagoland Skydiving in Hinckley, IL
Millenium Skydiving in Kankakee, IL
Skynights Skydiving in East Troy, WI

Of course they will. They regularly yell "BURN THE CANADIAN!" at me. Great fun!
You also get the added bonus of jumping with Chris(tine), a topless dancer who lives in Schaumberg...
People are great at all chicago area DZ's.
I've never been to a DZ that won't consider training done elsewhere. So start AFF where you are, just make sure you have good comments in your logbook so they'll know where to pick up.

You keep the tape and watch it as much as you want.

Or until you break it:D Geez, a prerequisite w/ my friends to chilling at my house and drinking is making sure I'm not going to put on my student video (which I discovered is broke the last time people came over:D) or crosswind, atmospheric, or good stuff DVD. Nothing better is on!

Crosswind is excellent except for the music. Everytime i watch it I crave altitude and pretend i was as bad ass as they are on the video. I thought the music was missing something. Especially the music during the BASE jumping. And what sounds like Limp Bisquet but in spanish during the bridge swooping Don't let that discourge you though, Great video.

44 out of 45 jumps have been at Skydive Chicago. Jump number 26 was at Skydive Illinois but I returned only once to be told they have no rental gear for me; rental gear was never a problem at SDC. I really want to check out Hinckley this summer, or sooner.

The most recent record attempt was called on account of a foot of snow. - SDC, Winter Expo.
We need an excuse the bring the Archway people up. I don't think there's enough of us without them.
AndyMan, skymedic, grumpysmurf, diverdriver, sunshine, Vallerina, hisgoofyness, fallingweenie... I think that's it - are all basically in Chicagoland.
