Topcat 0 #1 March 25, 2002 After a really fun 4-way w/ some highly experienced jumpers who I don't jump with often, I had a pilot chute in tow. Damn thing was cocked, it just wasn't doing it's job. I cut away - glad I did, because by the time I had the handle pulled I felt the bag leave my back, pulled my reserve, and landed. It occured to me, after 45 reserve pack jobs, I had my first save! Glad to know I was doing it right. The cool thing was one of the guys I was jumping with landed next to me (off-dz) and another landed next to my main and freebag. I even got lucky and someone found the cutaway handle I dropped! Some nice local folks gave us a ride back to the DZ and I told the guys I appreciated them looking after me. One of them said, "This sport will get more expensive than it is if your buds don't look after your gear for you".Another woman jumper at the dz let me use her rig so I didn't have to stop jumping on such a fine weekend. I'm a DZO who has tried to keep it in mind what skydiving is about. All those times I went tromping through the fields looking for missing free bags and all those times I cut some unfortunate skydiver some slack so he could keep jumping finally paid off last weekend.Just wanted to comment on how cool skydivers can be.-Sandy
Shark 0 #2 March 25, 2002 Nobody should ever leave there teammates. When somebody lands off after a cutaway, I often will either spot the main and/or freebag, and land with that person to ensure that there are no injuries. If possible and safe, persuing the main is an option.I've even landed with someone of the dz even though I would have made it back. Just so they had somebody to walk back with. Or debrief.... Topcat 0 #6 March 25, 2002 >>And since no one else has said it yet.... BEER!! Heh! That was one case I was delighted to buy!!My damn rigger doesn't like hard liquor, though. Knowing her, she's going to demand a case of hard to find beer. I think I can buy her off with a case of Anchor Porter though...
freeflir29 0 #7 March 25, 2002 Congrats!!! I watched a PC in tow happen this weekend. Poor guy only had 42 jumps and had misrouted his bridle. He was pretty quick with the procedures though and even stood up the reserve landing. SkydiveMonkey 0 #8 March 25, 2002 If someone lands off, it's a good idea to land with them anyway. Chances are they'll be ok, but they could have a bad landing etc. and might need help. I'm not crazy - I'm a Skydiver
bbarnhouse 0 #9 March 25, 2002 I had a reserve ride on jump 23. The DZO caught the freebag in his feet on the way down, the main is still in a tree and no great loss.I saw a guy whose main tore apart on a jump and his reserve didn't look too flyable to me. I couldn't get out to land next to him, but I sure made sure that I knew where he was, and sent someone after him. It is imperitive that we look after each other. At one DZ I landed out and I mean way out! Had to hike it back in the hot sun dressed all in black for what seemed to be 5 friggen miles. (It wasn't of course) Fortunetly, I was jumping with someone that was looking out for me, because when the van arrived, the driver said....."Oh we knew you were out here, I just got busy and forgot to come and get you." I won't expound any further than that.It only takes a little pixie dust......
