AggieDave 6 #1 March 24, 2002 Just when things are starting to fall into place with me being able to jump regularly. Having access to gear that I was able to use while I piece together my own gear (Aggie Club's stuff), the main canopy I was jumping falls apart. After my second jump yesterday, I was packing and noticed a small tear in one of the cells, so I put down the canopy and started inspecting it closer. I found that there were numorous tears through out the cells (that weren't there before) and found that the taped seams were the only thing holding the lines on at a few of the attatchment points on the stablizers. The canopy material was ripped clean away leaving holes around 3" in size. I had thought that the canopy was acting a little weird during that jump, but had written it off to the bumpy ride I was having because of winds. Also, I've only put something like 15 jumps on this canopy, took care of it, never even had a hard opening with it. No premature deployments, no nothing. I guess the canopy was just old, it was manufactured in 1984, I think, and has a few thousand jumps on it. I showed to a couple riggers and they basically said that I *could* send it to PD to see if it can be fixed, but more then likely PD would just ground the canopy. To top that off, the main wasn't actually apart of the club's gear, it was being borrowed from one of the jumpers in the club, so I get to call him and tell him that his PD 210 is toasted. That's going to be fun, let me tell you. Atleast I'm not the first person he loaned the canopy too, that would have made it harder. I think 4 different people have used that canopy over the course of the few years that the club member has had it. Since it was so old and so used, hopefully he won't want too much $$ for the damage canopy.Well, as of right now, I'm with out a main canopy, so I'm going to try to scrape enough $$ together to buy something used just I can jump. I hadn't planned on this and I don't actually have the money, so this will be very interesting. Atleast I still have 2 weeks till the FreeFly Festival in Spaceland and quite a while till the DZ.com gathering in Eloy."ahhhhoo...the little guy hasn't done anything yet and you know its going to be good..." skybytch 273 #2 March 24, 2002 Bummer Dave! Not to be a bytch... but this is exactly why loading an all F111 canopy over 1.0 or so is NOT recommended... especially if that canopy has a lot of jumps on it....pull and flare, lisa
ChromeBoy 0 #3 March 24, 2002 Clay might sell you his PD190?
AggieDave 6 #4 March 24, 2002 Well, lisa, it was all I had. *shrug* AND the tears weren't on load bearing lines."ahhhhoo...the little guy hasn't done anything yet and you know its going to be good..."
Zennie 0 #5 March 24, 2002 You might be able to get it patched for not too terribly much."Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."
AggieDave 6 #6 March 24, 2002 QuoteYou might be able to get it patched for not too terribly much.Already talked to my rigger and he said that how it ripped, etc that he would be very relunctant to rip it, saying that it would be better to ground the canopy. Especially due to the age of the canopy."ahhhhoo...the little guy hasn't done anything yet and you know its going to be good..."

ltdiver 3 #8 March 24, 2002 QuoteWell, as of right now, I'm with out a main canopy, so I'm going to try to scrape enough $$ together to buy something used just I can jump.Isn't that what tax refunds are supposed to be used for?? Seems to be what -I- do every year! Just ask quade!(Hmmmm thumbing through Square One's catalogue to pick a new canopy for this year...any suggestions Skybytch or SBS?)ltdiver____________________________________________LightDiverCam
AggieDave 6 #9 March 24, 2002 QuoteAND the tears weren't on load bearing lines.Let me explain this, I know that sounds stupid on my part. What I was trying to say is that the rips weren't on the main load bearing groups, that would take the shock of opening directly. It was on the left side stabilizers. Huh...oh-well. I think this was more due to the fact that the canopy was just about as old as I am and it has about the same number of jumps on it that Clay has posts (I think, I don't know an exact number, but I know its way high). Well, since I was trying to save for a new (read: used) canopy for myself anyways it will work out in the end. This just throughs a wrench into my plans, but the fluidness of finacial warfare is just that, fluid, so I'll adjust my plans and move on. Anyone have a Sabre 110 they'd like to sale me (note, Lisa, I'm joking, there's no way I'd jump that...it has to be atleast a Stilleto in the sub-100 range...).Actually, I guess I'm now in the market for a 170 ZP or 210 F111 canopy...*looking in classifieds*"Don't worry Face, I have a plan...I love it when a plan comes together.""ahhhhoo...the little guy hasn't done anything yet and you know its going to be good..." AggieDave 6 #13 March 25, 2002 A Tri 150 would be *fun* Especially the helicopter ride I got after it...I'm not even sure if I can buy anything yet, I have to see what my income tax return is then take a look. Then my goal is to try to get a Hornet 170 or 190, or even a PD 210, 230 or something like that...BUT once I figure out the finances I'm probably going to get just about anything I can get at the time according to $$ and what's available.
