billvon 3,088 #1 March 27, 2002 I was just thinking about this . . . We are all made up of a smorgasbord of elements, from hydrogen to selenium, in varying concentrations. All of these elements came from the cloud that the solar system condensed out of. A lot of it was hydrogen, which has been around since the Big Bang (63% of our bodies is hydrogen by molar concentration.) Most of the rest (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon) came from stellar combustion, from the ancient stars and protostars that created the gas clouds that our solar system came from. These stars burned hydrogen to helium, then when they ran out of that, started burning helium to carbon, and helium+carbon to oxygen. Some huge stars actually got to the silicon-burning phase, where they burned silicon to iron, phosphorous and nitrogen. These stars burned at an amazing 2 billion degrees K, compared to our sun's measly 10 million K.Problem is, stars can't fuse any element heavier than iron, even though we have significant amounts of iodine, zinc, selenium etc in us - all of which are heavier, by atomic weight, than iron. The only way to get those elements is during the incredible pressures, temperatures and neutron fluxes of a supernova. So, in a very real way, we're made of the ashes of ancient stars and supernovas. That old song "we are stardust" wasn't too far off. Kinda cool.-bill von

Now I'm going to go back and reread it, and try to understand it, like most of your posts. AndreaThe brave may not live forever, but the timid may not live at all. Magistr8 0 #20 March 28, 2002 Wow these are the things that I think about at work only on an IT level. What if our border routers had this type of encryption on them and we slapped this sorta ACL on it would we be able to prevent these people from getting access to this but others to it. Sometimes I get carried away and write down my ideas for 30 - 40 mins in my word docs are read them later to find out if there was any sense behind them or I was just getting carried away and getting excited.Ahem. Boobies. Who ever said comming down from a high was bad obviously never tried this.Magistr8
FallingMarc 0 #21 March 28, 2002 Sounds like some of the stuff I come up with when I'm sitting around... I have a paragraph written in one of my class notebooks that I wrote between classes one time last year, after an unusually depressing week or so. I don't know what happened to it but it was something about the incomprehensible amount of individual photons of light leaving the sun, and the fact that there's a few of them that traveled all the way here, dodged clouds and buildings to make it to the one I was in, forced its way through some dirty glass, bounced off the floor and into my eye. And after that 8.5 minute journey at light speed, and all that trouble, all it accomplished was to make me squint.Well, it entertained me for a while.M
