lummy 4 #30 March 28, 2002 and I'll echo Sebazz's thoughts......No, I will say it in my own words.... I personally do not look at or judge people by the color of their skin, the god they believe in (or don't), who or what (Skreamer disclaimer)they sleep with, what car they drive, how much money they are worth, political party affiliation, nationality, etc....Everyone (IMO) is entitled to live their own lives as they see fit just as long as they play nice with others..... sangiro 26 #33 March 28, 2002 What does it really matter if it's a choice or not? Would the one make it "right" and the other make it "wrong"? The issue in my opinion is one of respect and tolerance. The world seem to be full of disrespectful intolerant people expecting others to respect and tolerate them. This debate can not be won nor lost because people see the world not as it is, but as they are.Safe swoopsSangiro

sangiro 26 #43 March 28, 2002 Bill,You start with Darwinism - natural selection - in the first paragraph. Then you move into describing a society, applying rules that when repeated, results in the most beneficial outcome to the group in your next three paragraphs. Very good paragraphs. You end again with natural selection in the last paragraph. What you described in the middle three paragraphs (in my opinion) is self organization in complex dynamical or adaptive systems. Complexity Theory (cool stuff! Ok - I should hold back before I go off on this too much. You may already know everything there is to know about complexity. If not, take a look at Roger Levin's book: Complexity - Life at the edge of chaos. It's a great primer and I'm sure it'll get you to want to dig into loads of other books on the topic. I think you'll enjoy it.Something else. Complexity theory applied to communities and societies have been widely studied. All communities are complex and these forums are no different. When I decided how these would be run, complexity theory played a large part in my thinking and still does. How do you bring order to a system as complex as an online community and still get the most value out of it? Find the one, two, three or four very simple basic rules that when you apply them over and over at again at a local level will bring order at the global level and keep us at the edge of chaos. Like I said, this is where the community is at it's most potent and we'll be able to tap that creativity and learn the most from each other. By the way, I think this can also be applied to build big-ways faster and safer.... I just don't know how! Maybe that's what we do already . Muenkel 0 #44 March 28, 2002 Personally, I think they are checking the wrong part of the body to see if someone is biologically gay. They should be checking a guys...you know...and find out if they have special nerves that makes it pleasurable to stick something up there.I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I have had my prostate checked by my doctor with only 1 finger and ouch!!!!!!!!!!!! I just don't get it.Skydivers...they're just plain cool!Chris
jfields 0 #45 March 28, 2002 Another good book about chaos theory is James Gleick's "Chaos, Making a New Science". It isn't a terribly technical book, but it is a fun read that won't turn away non-scientists.Muenkel, I think your prostate exam experience is fodder for an entirely different thread. Okay. I can't resist....I don't think checking a guy's ass for nerves has anything to do with whether they are "straight" or "gay". It has much more to do with whether they are open-minded. There is plenty of medical documentation about how men can have orgasms caused completely by stimulation of the prostate. I'm not trying to pick on you personally. It's doubtful you knew what to expect in the exam, and that isn't a setting conducive to relaxing and experimenting. Not to mention, you probably wouldn't be inclined to do so anyway. There is nothing wrong with that. I'm not criticizing you for not being interested in that. I also wouldn't criticize people because of what they do enjoy sexually. Lots of people feel differently about it, whatever their sexual preference. It doesn't have to be another man's penis stimulating the prostate. Some women like to have their nipples played with. It arouses them. Others don't care for the sensation. Same with other parts of both the male and female body. The place that differentiates sexual identity is sort of hard to reach, since it is inside the skull. We can't easily poke, prod and test the brain. We have to rely on the very imprecise thoughts people share verbally or put to paper. Not everyone wants to share, or is expressive enough to do it any justice anyway.Just my $.02. Next time, ask the doctor to use more KY. Justin

Magistr8 0 #47 March 28, 2002 I have been following this thread and read the article in great detail. After reading the arcticle it is clear that so much effort is being expended to find out why some men are gay because they are different and not so much as to why these people are gay.In another thread posted recently, it was said very well that we as a species always ask the question why and push our limits and boundaries of knowledge. This setting is the staging ground for the next generation. It seems to make more sense to me that all though these men are homosexual and like men the real question here is why are they not like the rest of us. Clay> your post really hit the nail head on. Good oneWho ever said comming down from a high was bad obviously never tried this.Magistr8

It isn't a terribly technical book, but it is a fun read that won't turn away non-scientists. Yup - great book! Simply put if you have 'things' totally structured on the left, and totally chaotic to the right... then complexity happens somewhere in the middle, closer to the chaos side than the order side. That's over simplistic of course but you get the idea.
