What a long, strange, trip it's been...

Recommended Posts

Wow! I've been here for a year and a half... arrived right after my tandem in August 2000... and I finally just reached "old hand" status! If I don't start jumping again soon I will surpass my jump numbers!!!! Either that, or post less! Hmmmm, my hands don't LOOK old!

Keep posting, you will be jumping soon. BTW, I also broke my right knee a few years ago. Right lateral tibial plateau fracture - outch. It did get better and did not need any pins or reconstruction. Now it does get a little stiff on cold days, but it is back 100%....

Tom -
Rock on! Great to hear about your knee! That is awesome. I can cope with it gettting stiff every now and then. I just dont' want there to be too much pain to jump. Like that'll ever happen. I was SO ready in the ER to say "amputate" if they would have said no more jumping. But they seem to think I will get 100% and I am so active and work out so much I will keep it well oiled! ;o) The only complication I have to worry about will be to see if my minisci are intact when I walk on it in May. That will be when I find out if there are pieces in there. They were gonna remove most, if not all of it (for those who don't know, your miniscus (i) are the shock absorbers in your knee) but since all the little pieces of bone pulled together like a puzzle they figured the miniscus hadn't fallen between the pieces and gotten torn like usually happens with injuries of this sort. So what did you do to your tibia? How long were you out? Thanks again for makin' me smile!

Landing with a Tandem student in a soft field. My right foot stopped in the loose/soft soil and me and the student did a belly flop over my knee. The student got a couple of grass stains on her arm, I had a direct impact fracture within my knee. It was a "clean" injury with no tearing or twisting - that is what helped the most.
I was in a brace for 6 weeks and no weight bearing. I had 5 weeks of physical therapy after that. From the date of injury to my next hop and pop was about 12 - 13 weeks.
I hate to jog and do not miss running on a hard surface. I will run on the streets every once and a while, but keep mostly to the exercise bike and elliptical runner. You will recover fine, I did have some partial crushing of the miniscus, but my Orthopedic said that he could not fix it any better during surgery and we will just watch it for now.

Geez....for $1000 you'd think you COULD put it in hot water...
Ok Clay - you just made me laugh out loud! Good point!!! I like jello. It was my sole source of nourishment after the whole tongue severing thing. God, do I have a lot of battle scars or what?!

Are you sure you should be skydiving? Maybe you stick to something safer. Like sex.....:D The tongue works OK now...Right?

The tongue is better than ever and has a super-sensual ridge as a result. Really want me to stop skydiving now? And for the record - the first accident was someone else crashing into me (my lesson was don't jump with unknowns!... I have video to prove it!) and the last one was a decent landing if I hadn't locked my knee. Crap - if I broke every bone in my body I'd keep coming back to this sport. But I think I have met my quota for now!

Happened at Delmarva. Are you kidding? The freefliers at Orange would never have let that happen! Not that it was anyone's fault but ours... but Delmarva is a belly flyin dz. So I mostly flew solo or with one other guy (Tony - you probably see him at Orange now) I had never flown with this other guy but was told he was very good. I should have insisted on a sol with him but went along with the 3-way. Some lessons you learn the hard way!

No nosey at all! I wish I could post it. It is a learning tool. It used to freak me out to watch it cause seeing yourself unconscious on your back in freefall is a little unnerving. But at least it has a happy ending (and opening!)
