SkydiveMonkey 0 #1 March 29, 2002 Heard a rumour that Luigi Cani is going to be flying a VX-36 sometime soon. Is that true? I thought the 46 was crazy !!! I'm not crazy - I'm a Skydiver
axe96bam 0 #2 March 29, 2002 I could not find anything about a VX36 on the Icarus website. They only have the info on the VX46.
skycat 0 #3 March 29, 2002 If you think about it, it's a wingloading thing, he weighs about the same as I do ok maybe a little more but as far as I know not much more I know he jumps with lead in competitions to give him the higher wingloadings. The question is will he be jumping it with lead or not.So like Derek jumps the VX60 at 3.1:1 well if I jumped it I would only loading it 2:1 for me to jump a canopy at 3.1:1 I would need something like a VX38. You have no idea how many people freaked out when they heard I was going to be jumping a 104, the thing is I'm only loading it at 1.2:1. So the 36 is extremely tiny, but it isn't as insane as it could be if someone like Eric Butts was jumping it.
SkydiveMonkey 0 #4 March 29, 2002 Cani loaded the 46 at between 3.5 and 4.1 as I recall. Even at a 1:1 loading, the canopy would still turn like a f***er. I'm not crazy - I'm a Skydiver
axe96bam 0 #5 March 29, 2002 I think that Luigi has loaded the VX46 as heavy as 4.8 with weights, but don't quote me on that. I think I read this in an article somewhere.Alex
skycat 0 #6 March 29, 2002 According to the webpage his suspended weight is 160 (I'm almost possitive that is with lead) so that put him at 3.4 on the 46. So if he goes with that exit weight he will be 4.4 on the 36. Hmmmm.....wonder how fast he can run/slide? Icarus needs some chick test jumpers can you immagine how small they can go with someone my size under it, Hmmm...4.4 with no lead that is like a 27......anyone need a kite? axe96bam 0 #7 March 29, 2002 I believe Luigi thinks that he can safely land a VX28 if they made him one.
skycat 0 #8 March 29, 2002 Sorry I have rules...I'm not going below 20 ft, nope not going to do it. Actually I wonder at what size the actually lack of canopy starts to come into play with the flare, as such that there really isn't enough tail to give a good flare. Then of course at what wing loading is the stall speed so high you just can't run it out. I mean guys like Luigi are very athletic, but when is the speed just to much for even him. AggieDave 6 #9 March 29, 2002 Lets, see, with out weights I would load a VX60 at 4.3, a VX35 at 7.4! I'm not sure what the difference between freefall and a VX 35 would be for me, either way I would have one hell of a swoop, right down the pond and right to the morgue..."Homer Simpson, smiling politely." axe96bam 0 #10 March 29, 2002 I think this 28 size is something they came up with from their finding and knowledge on wing loading and aerodynamics. on a different note - I would load a 46 at 3.3 and a 35 at 4.3. So it would not me much different for me jumping the 46 than it is for Derek jumping the 60!Alex

axe96bam 0 #12 March 29, 2002 Not yet! Maybe someday. I am now flying a 79 so a 46 is a long ways away for now. Thanks for the encouragement though. Alex

I wouldn't land it, but I'd jump it.>Actually I wonder at what size the actually lack of canopy starts to come into> play with the flare, as such that there really isn't enough tail to give a good flare.I don't think that's really the issue. There are remote controlled parachutes that are 2 sq ft that land just fine. The issue is that your body and rig generate more and more drag as speed increases, so your L/D goes down. At some point, you can't get the L/D high enough for long enough to slow yourself down for landing i.e. even with a massive hook, you wouldn't be able to get enough lift before you ran out of speed to bring your vertical velocity to zero.>Then of course at what wing loading is the stall speed so high you just can't run> it out. Well, that's why they made swoop ponds.-bill von

SkydiveMonkey 0 #16 March 29, 2002 I can land under a pilot chute. Won't be able to erm... breathe / walk / live after it but hey. I'm not crazy - I'm a Skydiver

billvon 3,107 #18 March 29, 2002 >I have heard somebody claimed they will land a wing suit one day.. ;)>One just needs landing gear..Not even that. Land on water. Probably survivable, although practicing for it would be tough.-bill von
axe96bam 0 #19 March 29, 2002 You guys are having fun with the subject, but there are people out there figuring a way to actually land tiny canopies and even birdman suits. I would not be surprised at all when that happens.Alex
PhreeZone 20 #20 March 29, 2002 You read in this months Parachutist about the canopy to birdman batton passing that Jari is practicing?I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend... ~3EB
