Ok this may belong in Gear & Rigging...

Recommended Posts

Ok, I posted this in gear and rigging but since I know it may be beneficial to those (like me) who don't check out G&R that much I'll post it here.
Noticed (while looking at the grand prize for the photo contest) that bonehead has redesigned their site -- also noticed they are now offering Bone Bonds which is a "double your money guarantee" in 3 months. Buy a 100.00 bond today and in July get 200 bucks worth of bonehead gear. Very neat. While I was looking over their new products, I found they have a helmet called the "rider's rage" found here. This thing looks like the brain buckets the HOG riders use but one model comes with spikes on it. Now in my humble opinion a skydiving helmet with spikes on it seems kinda stupid on the part of the designer. Think about a mid air collision with a freeflyer wearing a spiked helmet...
What do you guys think?

Interesting... wonder how they do that? They must be investing it somehow to make up on part of that $100. I doubt they're doubling it in 6 months though. But, when you do use it, they aren't really losing money, it's just cutting into the profit.
Don't like the 'skull cap' type helmet for motorcycling, and sure don't like it for skydiving - with or without spikes.

Well bonehead :
A) sells equipment for "extreme sports" (per their website) while I have a motorcycle and drive it extremely fast, I don't consider it an extreme sport
B) They have never sold any other product other than skydiving related equipment... so if they were to make a motorcycle helmet don't you think they'd make a big deal out of the fact "this is our first attempt at a motorcycle helmet" or something?
C) Helmets used for motorcycles have to be DOT certified (to be legal) which requires a good bit of mumbo jumbo. they make no mention of DOT certification.

Isn't there always a chance that if you add accessories to skydiving gear (likes spikes on a helmet for example) you increase the chance of a line getting caught on them? Even if the chance is very small it I know I would want to avoid it all together and why not when there are so many other helmets available. I guess what I'm saying is it seems like a bad design. Helmets are supposed to increase safety, not decrease it.

Actually, they have sold products aimed at other than skydiving related markets - the BellVue camera mounts are being used by movie studios for example. I fail to see the problem with a company branching out into other markets...

Maybe they don't want to make a big deal out of it. I dunno. I don't own that company...

I understood the helmets WERE skydiving helmets, but intended exclusively for swoopers doing hop&pops.
I read somewhere bonehead saying they strongly recomended not taking the helmets terminal, they probably wouldn't stay on.
I also understand the spikes on the back are made of rubber and are quite flexible, so they're not snag risks.
Of course, I could be completely talking out of my ass...

Actually, it does say
"FOR THE BIKER IN ALL OF US! "
at the bottom of those pictures. Chances are, it is a bike helmet. I don't think they would be stupid enough to make something with a spike on it for skydiving.. Maybe it's an April's fools joke that wasn't removed ??

Part is probably investing, but i think that is a very small part of it. What they are probably more looking at is the fact that it will incerase their sales when these "bonds" get "cashed in". It is worth $200, but try finding things that will be exactly $200. Chances are the customer will end up spending more than the $100 they originally shelled out for the $200 bond, which is partly the idea behind any gift certificate program.
Furthermore, there will be some people who will forget about teh bond, lose it etc etc. hence, some will not get redeemed.
In the end it acts as a reverse sale with a guaranteed cash flow.

Actually, motorcycle helmets DO NOT have to be DOT certified. BUT if you buy one that is, you can be assured it meets certain safety standards. Have you ever seen those people that come from states that do not require helmets? If they are traveling through the country they usually have a small helmet like mentioned strapped to their gear for helmet required states. These helmets are barely helmets but nontheless fullfill that law.

Actually, I think most states stipulate that it has to be a DOT Approved (or Snell for those not in the states). Well, those states that have helmet laws anyway. Ok, most states' laws read "state approved" - which normally means DOT approved.
IIRC - Ohio's law is that once you get your license (and while you're still riding on a permit), you must wear a DOT approved helmet for the first year.
I could be wrong, it's happened before.
