skymama 37 #1 April 8, 2002 Just heard on the news that there was a skydiver missing in Deland. The news plane was showing an overhead shot. I called one of my friends and he confirmed it. He was out looking in the woods. The information I got from him, was that the guy exited doing a hop and pop, and no one ever saw his canopy open. I'm still hoping the best for our brother.Andi"Yes it's windy. There are ripples on the pond." weid14

skymama 37 #5 April 8, 2002 The latest news is that the Sheriff's Dept. has run off all the jumpers from helping to look for the guy. The only thing I know about his identity, is that he is an older gentlemen, probably in his 70's, who comes out to do hop-n-pops.Andi"Yes it's windy. sitflyr 0 #7 April 8, 2002 QuoteThe latest news is that the Sheriff's Dept. has run off all the jumpers from helping to look for the guy. Maybe they're trying to use infrared to find him. We had that happen at our dz, and we had to leave the woods so that the chopper with infrared could discern the missing jumper without all of us cluttering things up.I hope this guy has a better outcome than our jumper did. skymedic 0 #10 April 8, 2002 Ramon...I used to work on that very chopper that is helping those guys out....dont say "typical cops"....Volusia County has some of the best....Cheers....vasbytmarc"I have no fear of falling, I just hate hitting the ground"-The Badlees... SniperCJ 0 #11 April 8, 2002 Typical cops!??Thanks Ramon. So much for the open-mindedness of skydivers. I'll keep that in mind next time I see a "typical freeflyer" with green hair, piercings and such...I'd say unless youre in Florida and know the story, how about giving the cops the benefit of the doubt and figure theres a reason they did that (assuming they even DID do it, given second and third hand information and all).JC
weid14 0 #12 April 8, 2002 Its easier to find A person with infrared when there aren't a bunch of little heat producing objects running around in the swamp!
skymedic 0 #13 April 9, 2002 Thanks weid....I was gonna say that...but figured I wouldn't let on to the little toys.....Cheers....vasbytmarc"I have no fear of falling, I just hate hitting the ground"-The Badlees...
lazerq3 0 #14 April 9, 2002 Would infra red work on a person that was no longer...I mean does the body retain enough heat........I dont mean to bring up the worst but you have to consider all posibilites.....jason
skymedic 0 #15 April 9, 2002 Yes...it will...for quite some time...even a 10 degree difference is noticeable on the flear.....this isn't normal infra red your talking about....Cheers....vasbytmarc"I have no fear of falling, I just hate hitting the ground"-The Badlees... schuair 0 #16 April 9, 2002 Sure the human body radiates heat for several hours after death. But it its, also a function of ambient temp vs body temp. It's pretty cool out there now and they should find him. That's my drop zone and I'm a (former) Search and Rescue person, my first thought was to go help. But a trained and corrodinated search equipped with communications, medical gear ect. is better than all of us running through the woods. It still sucks though, I 'd fire up the dozer and go help in a second.
rgoper 0 #17 April 9, 2002 lay off Ramon, he didn't mean anything by it. this is tragic, let's everybody "keep it under control"Richard"When The Going Get's Tough, The Tough Get Going"

TheMarshMan1 0 #19 April 9, 2002 Oh that sucks.....DeLand is probably my favorite place on earth, and im sending every good vibe I can muster that way...."If I could be like that, I would give anything, just to live one day, in those shoes..."
diverdriver 6 #20 April 9, 2002 You know, he could still be alive and unconcious. On the FLIR it just might stand out quit a bit now. I'm hopeful.Chris
indyz 1 #21 April 9, 2002 I watched the Illinois State Police (or possibly Cook County, Lake doesn't have their own chopper), use a helicopter with FLIR to locate a suicide victim in an overgrown field more than 24 hours after the fact. If he is in those woods, they'll find him. Hopefully he just has a broken leg or something and can't hike out.--Brian
jtval 0 #22 April 9, 2002 the FLIR is capable of picking up even risidual heat...if you take a SODA out of the fridge and hold it for ten seconds, put it down and walk away you will still see YOUR HAND PRINT on the soda can for about 8-12 seconds! pretty powerful thing that FLIR!it can also detect your breath on a cool surface!if, in the worst case scenerio, they used the FLIR balls to find this guy they would be able to find traces of heat all around him.I'm still hoping they follow those traces to the bar.getting high is fun, but coming down is the best partJT
