scare!

Recommended Posts

OK, so it was the last jump of the day today, and me and me brother had a wonderful jump together. It was the best. We broke away at 4500, and I watched him fall, and fall, and fall..... After at least 5 seconds(at least) after my chute was fully deployed, I am STILL watching him fall, and at this point screaming--and pardon my french "PULL YOUR FUCKING CORD!!" Finally, a nice blue parachute opens up and he landed safe. Turns out, he couldn't find his hackey. Then, when he thought he had it, he pulled, and accidently had the cutaway pillow instead. so, he obviously pulled the reserve. No damage done, but a huge scare for me watching him. HE was fine, but felt a bit embarassed. Just goes to show, practice is necessary to pull. You can always have a total brain malfuntion--even if your gear is fine. I am sooooo glad he is ok. I told him if he ever did that to me again, I would beat the crap out of him.

maybe he paniced and just started pulling stuff?

Pull, nope, pull, nope...pull, pull, pull, pull, pull...yeah...;):D
I'm glad to hear he came out ok. Freaky when you see someone in FF much lower then they should be, huh? Freaked me out the couple times I've seen it.

On one of my longer freefalls from the Cessna I waved at 4500, got under canopy and saw the JM still in freefall. I was thinking "pull!" when I realized that he probably wasn't much lower than 3000.

It was definately freaky---especially since it was my bro, and I told him I would buy him a beer if he went up for one last jump of the day. THat was running through my head right away.
Our dz owner warned us about this kinda stuff in training. SOmetimes your brain just thinks you have the hackey,or ripcord, and maybe you are grabbing on to the side of the rig.
I am not wearing gloves for the rest of the season for that reason. He didn't have any on, but I think--why interfere?

In fact, I think it's freaky to see someone in freefall when you're already under canopy. I had this once on a S/L jump I did. I was floating around at about between 1,500 and 2,000 ft. and suddenly I see the JM (for those who know him: it was Martijn van Dam...) soar by in freefall. It was quite an impressive sight.

I watched a guy bounce several years ago because he apparently couldn't locate his recently relocated to BOC handle. He panicked and pulled his cutaway handle and rather than deploying his reserve he continued to flounder for his main. He finally found it and threw it out at about 500 ft but of course he had already pulled his cutaway. Make certain of the location of all of your handles and practice, especially on new or borrowed gear.

Like the man said prctice till you can't stand it anymore. I used to do 5 practices in the shower every day. I still do 3 on the ride up.....arch reach pull. look red grab red look silver grab silver peel and pull red pull silver. I watch people just of student status and they don't even touch their handles on the way up and I just don't understand that it only takes about a minute and you have 15 of those on the ride up, but you only have seconds in freefall

You got it Snowy my man, almost 1000 jumps (prep those pies folks), and I go though the same routine everytime I put my rig on. It also means if your handles are tucked in (it happens..), or the hackey is buried (saw this on a world record and it resulted in a cutaway) you will pick it up on the ground first :)Its part of my 'ritual'.....

I still do 3 on the ride up.

I touch my handles three times: once before boarding, one just before jump run and one just prior to exit. But honestly, it's more to check if everything's still in place than anything else. I'm pretty sure I'll pull the right handles in the right order when I need to.

Yah, I was teasing him about that. We were talkin to the dzo and I was like, "DOn't you practice pulling at home? I know I do!" He , of course, does practice--I think he just had a brain fart.
