spinmaster 0 #2 April 13, 2002 Last time I went threw Skipol (sp?) it took them 2 hours to get my luggage to me. Not very cool after a 9 hour international flight.Last time I went threw Frankfurt my luggage made a 20min transfer from an Internaitonal flight to a domestic flight.....very cool.just my 2cents.Dan
Milo 0 #3 April 13, 2002 I had a 10 hour layover in Amsterdam in November. Enough time to see a little of the town?? The 11 pm train didn't show up until 1 am. Amsterdam isn't a pretty town at 1:00 am when you can't even buy a pack of (socially unacceptable) cigarettes and the only people on the street are other addicts craving a fix from more socially acceptable drugs. The airport itself was fine, they even have a machine hidden in a corner that (gasp!) sells cigarettes.Milo
mountainman 0 #4 April 13, 2002 I had less than one hour in the Amsterdam airport in 1998 to make it to my connection from Helsinki to Newark.I'm sure you know how big the thing is, right? Needless to say, I was booking it through the airport and just barely made it in time.Damn, huge, airports...JumpinDuo.com...come and sign the guestbook. Skyrose7 0 #12 April 15, 2002 I was supposed to meet my brother at Schipol and got lost. He didnt know that once you went through customs, you couldn't go back. He just wanted to get his luggage and then meet me at my gate (I was an hour late). Finally, our walkie talkies kicked in and we found eachother. I was kinda nervous for a bit--first time out of North America. The mind is like a parachute--it works better when it is open. JUMP.

fonz 0 #16 April 15, 2002 [Sort of fell right into the middle of this - sorry]First: as far as I know, Schiphol (as Amsterdam Airport is commonly called) isn't very big (on the contrary, I think it's rather compact) and there's direction signs all over the place so it should be completely easy to get around.Second: although we Dutchies love to complain about it, the infrastructure is pretty good. Trains right into the heart of downtown Amsterdam leave every 10 or 15 minutes or so and trains run to other major western cities such as Leiden, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht at least once every hour, 24/7.Third: dunno about the cigarettes but no doubt you can get them somewhere anytime. Many Dutchies smoke! By the way: note that currently no alcohol may be served between (I think) 2 am and 6 am due to the homeless alledgedly causing trouble.Fourth: Amsterdam can really suck if you don't know your way around. But if you do know where to find the hot spots, then... well... let's keep it at least a tad decent okay As the great David Letterman would say: "It's a cesspool!"Fifth: I grew up in Apeldoorn, a (for Dutch understanding) major city almost adjacent to Teuge. And although Teuge is easily accessible by train (and a bus for the last couple of miles), no way do you get there in an hour or less (not by train, anyway ).Sixth: Martijn's last name is spelled with one M (van Dam, not van Damm) and as far as I know, he's still a fulltime clown and skygod at Skydive Teuge.Alphonshttp://www.liacs.nl/~avwerven/skydive
nacmacfeegle 0 #17 April 15, 2002 Fonz, sorry about spelling Martijn's name wrong, I was travelling that line every fortnight a lot last summer (Between Amsterdam and Bad Bentheim--first stop over the German border--yuk--not far from Hengelo--nice), and I'm pretty sure Teuge (Deventer?) was about an hour out of the Dam......That was on an IC train...Okay, mebbe a little longer. The point I was trying to make was that you can have fun jumping in Holland, and its quite easy to get around, one point I didn't make was that the folks at Teuge are real friendly..BTW as far as I'm concerned Holland (or more politely, the Netherlands) rocks.CyaD
fonz 0 #18 April 15, 2002 Quote sorry about spelling Martijn's name wrong, Hey, it's not my name you got wrong. Just thought I'd point it out. That's all. No harm done or anything.QuoteOkay, mebbe a little longerGuess it depends on one's definition of distance. I checked and it takes about an hour and a half. Not a big deal QuoteThe point I was trying to make was that you can have fun jumping in HollandThat's quite okay.Quoteone point I didn't make was that the folks at Teuge are real friendly..I have some experiences proving the opposite, but let's not go there. I suppose you can have fun at most DZs if you like the kind of people that hang out there.QuoteRegardless of what David Letterman says.Actually, he means New York. I merely applied that quote of his to Amsterdam and I meant it in a positive way, just as I think Dave does with NY. Amsterdam really can be a lot of funAlphonshttp://www.liacs.nl/~avwerven/skydive
