%&$#ing Car! (warning - profanity)

Recommended Posts

Fucking cars. I hate them. I've dumped over $1000 into my car this year; rebuilt the transmission and put on a new catalytic converter - piece of shit is only worth about $800... Took it in this afternoon to see why the left front was squealing and was told it needs brakes all around - including new drums in the rear - to the tune of over FOUR HUNDRED fucking DOLLARS! That's a whole fucking PAYCHECK!
Fuck! Shit! Damn! Bloody fucking hell! I've been trying to sell my kids dirt bike so I can finish paying for the 60 way camp next month.... now it's looking like my fucking piece of shit car is going to eat that money too and derail my goal of getting on the womens world record cuz I won't be able to afford the try out camp. Fuck! Fuck! FUCK! >:(>:(>:(
I am not a happy camper this afternoon.... please excuse me while I go sit in a corner and pout.
pull & flare,
lisa

Do the work yourself and you'll probably save atleast $100. I'm sorry that happened, Lisa, that royally sucks...you don't really *need* breaks anyways, right? ;)
Also, see if you can machine the drums instead of replacing them. Eventually you'll need to replace them, but you might be able to save these for another 7,000 miles or so.

Unfortunately the drums are beyond machining - they're the originals and the car has over 80,000 on it - not machinable anymore. Luckily the rotors on the front aren't scored... yet...
If I beg I can probably get my dad to do the fronts for the cost of the pads but I doubt he'll want to do the rears - he hates doing drum brakes and I'm not sure he has the tools for it anymore anyway.
Viking, the camp is in Eloy - weekend before Memorial Day... I have to have the balance due to them by the end of this week though :(

I owe $300 more on the camp. I'm selling what stocks I have tomorrow and hoping my kid will get the bike gone shortly thereafter. I'm going to put off the brakes for a couple weeks (round trip to work is only 26 miles a day; should be able to get another 500 miles out of them.. I hope :)

What kinda Wagon is that?

It's an '83 Ford LTD wagon. Stylish machine, eh? ;)
I'm calling junkyards tomorrow to see how cheap I can get drums...
It'll work out. Always does. I'm just allowing myself a couple hours of wallowing in self pity right now...

$400 for brakes? Wow. A competent mechanic could probably do both front pads and rear pads in about 1 to 1.5 hours. Be sure to ask how they're billing the job. If they use something like 'Chilton time' they bill whatever the cost estimates are in repair manual. i.e. A timing belt might be 2.6h in an 87 LeBaron 4-cyl (since I've had one done) and that's what they bill for the labor. If that's the case there isn't much you can do but pay it. You might want to take it someplace else that isn't a dealer or a brake shop. And don't forget to ask to see the worn out drums and have the repairs explained to you. I take every opportunity I can to get under my car with a mechanic, but make it sound like "I'm not disagreeing with you, but I'm trying to learn a few things here."

I'd check a wrecking yard for the rear drums. If you tell them what you are looking for they can round it up for you (probably at a reasonable price). You might ask some skydivers you trust. Maybe they know of somebody who would do the work for a fair price. I know some garages are really rip-off specialists, especially when dealing with a woman. I wish we could help more. Steve
