AggieDave 6 #2 April 24, 2002 Disagree.Heros are those who face an obsticle so great that they can not over come, but through all adversity, due to their strength of character and resolved will, they overcome.A human cannonball, I rise above it allUp higher then a trapeze, I can fly

lazerq3 0 #4 April 24, 2002 Yeah I agree to disagree!!! I think heros are people that find themselves in a situation that they have no chioce but to react accordingly.......Too many people have died trying to be heros by putting themselves in unessisary dangers!!!! I mean look at police and firemen/women...they dont go out and try to put htere selves in danger to be a hero...they do there job as safe as the situation allows them too to get the job done and save lives......unfortunatly sometimes theres no safe way around it.......either way there all heros to me whether they think so or not!!jason
FallingILweenie 0 #5 April 24, 2002 I disagree with Dave simply because just hardship doesn't make a person a hero.A person that overcomes cancer is not a hero. They are resilient as hell and have my respect because from what I understand the treatments are very painful, but they aren't heroes. I guess to me a hero involves a selflessness or dedication to some other person. I agree that policemen, firemen, soldiers, etc can be heroes because they put their life on the line, but so can doctors and teachers. They don't risk as much but what they give can be just as great. I think a hero is more about what you give to another person than what you give of yourself (because focusing on what you give of yourself is slanting it in a somewhat selfish direction).my own opinion, of course. blue skiesTomas"Marge, it takes 2 people to lie. AggieDave 6 #6 April 24, 2002 Quotebut so can doctors and teachersWhat I said isn't limited to those who put their lives on the line. The obsticles faced and adversities faced could be that one kid from a broken home headed for personal disaster that a teacher "saves" or the doctor who provided free care for a family who couldn't afford it.I agree with you Tomas, I'm just saying that what I said covered that. I didn't say anything about hardship. A human cannonball, I rise above it allUp higher then a trapeze, I can fly

SkydiveMonkey 0 #9 April 24, 2002 I think it's both - Heros will put themsleves into danger to help others, but on the other hand, people find themselves in the shit and still have the courage to make a difference. AndyMan 7 #10 April 24, 2002 I wonder if this is another case of Bill "Open mouth, insert foot, remove foot, season to taste...."I stumbled acrross the quote, and without knowing the context, thought of the victims of 9/11.Where the office workers heros? I think he's right - simply being a victim of disaster does not a hero make, but the firefighters - those who ran INTO the building where. Is it possible I agree with Bill Maher? looks like it..._AmICQ: 5578907MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfeYahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

JDBoston 0 #13 April 24, 2002 A hero is someone who puts the welfare of others above their own personal comfort and safety. There are degrees of this, of course, so in order to narrow the definition I would say they need to risk physical harm, public ridicule, poverty or something similarly serious.Personally, I don't think it matters whether they sought out the situation, or simply found themselves in it and stayed.Joe
bill2 0 #14 April 24, 2002 Agree/disagree. People who find themselves in harm's way can end up being heroes because of what they did once they found themselves in that particular situation. I do think that heroes, to be heroes, need to risk something. The term hero these days is sadly overused.
quade 4 #15 April 24, 2002 Quote"Heroes are people who put themselves in harm's way, not people who find themselves in harm's way".I think you have to understand what he means my this.I take this to mean that the passengers that sat there and did nothing were not nessasarily heros just because they were on the plane, but those that attempted to retake the plane certainly were heros even though they simply "found" themselves in that position. Also, remember that it's Bill Maher's job to stir up a little discussion and make you think of stuff like this. He gets a lot of heat for what he says things sometimes, but then again, that's his job.quadehttp://futurecam.com
