War on terror

Recommended Posts

Bill,
I'd like to agree with you, but, strange as it may sound, I feel like humans as a species would actually get bored without a certain amount of conflict, risk, and death. Granted, we have made a great deal of progress, and we should continue to do everything in our power to keep wars from breaking out, but my fear is that humans just aren't wired for a perfectly peaceful existence. Frankly, most ordinary people NEED an enemy or at least an opposing group in order to keep their sense of identity intact. It's not ideal, but I do think that's how we're built. Still, I'd like to be wrong.

Yup, Gananoque. Not a bad little DZ there, either.
See the attached map. The cottage is at the hand drawn X.
The map is pretty innacurate, too. Gananoque sits on the St Lawrence River, not Lake Ontario.

yeah, that would be it. haven't been to that dz yet, but that should change this summer. Heard a lot of good stories about that dz. They have been quite the pioneers in this sport and the student progression in it.

Yup, good people too. Crappy planes but good people.

I agree with you on that, and I think that's a basic need. I hope that, in the future, we can fulfill that need through sports, competitions, inherently dangerous activities, etc. Millions of Americans do just that. Heck, _we_ do that.
And while we do have a need for 'real' risk, I don't think there's a basic need to kill.

Do a net search on the Unabomber's Manifesto and read what he says about replacement activities. A strange place to find philosophy, but some of what he says is valid.

You miss my point. We will always have great men willing to die for their country, religion and ideals, and they will always be needed. Someday, their objective will simply not be to kill as many of the people they disagree with as possible. MLK has shown us that it's possible to sacrifice one's life for a cause, and to do it without bloodshed. I hope that the future holds more men like him than men like Milosevic, Bin Laden and Hussein, and that our differences are settled in the seats of goverment througout the world rather than through the deaths of our fathers, mothers and children.
Again, if anyone wishes otherwise I very much hope they are never in positions of power.

MLK was murdered, how do you call that "without bloodshed"? and don't forget the riots that followed. On the part where we have more people like him than Hussein, etc. I agree with you; although I don't think that will happen anytime soon.
