4:20 Boogie at DeLand

Recommended Posts

Hey all,
I don't know how many heard about the 4:20 Boogie, but if you didn't here's what went down. The Boogie was from 18 to 21 April 2002 at De Land. I arrived late Friday night after the final load, I relly wanted to check in and get the vibes for the next day. Immediately I was greeted by Jimmy Tranter. He was super friendly and gave me the scoop, talked with me for a while and intoduced me to the rest of the instructors Alex Ramos, Hunter Roberts , and Francisco Neri? I think was his name. All guys were relly down to earth and cool, They really thought this boogie out and had a real good game plan for the most part. That night Scot Miller from PD had a high performance canopy seminar, it was a must attend to all those who want to dable in High perf flying. The way they had it set up was 3 types of dive groups, 3D, tracking, and Freeflying. Each group had one of the four instructors which would organize and lead the dive based on skill level of the flyers for the jump. I signed my name up for freeflying group and made some incredible dives with Alex. We made some 8 way flocking dives, docking drill dives and relative work headdown dives staying on the level. I also got on Tracking dives, finishing the day off with a 19 way tracking Sunset dive led by Hunter which gave me a new view on tracking. I mean they can track. That night a party was thrown with free beer and food for the boogie participants with live DJ's disco lights ect.
On Sunday morning we did more freeflying, tracking, and 3D. By the afternoon Mike Swanson , Rook Nelson, and Dave Brown showed up and started doing bigways with the instructors. I believe they ended up building 10 and 11 ways. All in all it was an great boogie with some really instructional dive that I'm sure raised everybodies flying skills. The debriefs were thurough and complete and each instructor helped out their students reach goals and ways to improve. The only critique points that I had, even though I missed the first 2 days( some of us have jobs during the week) . They could of split some of the groups a little more as far as experience level, I felt that on some flights there were a few guys that didn't need to be on those jumps just yet. Another item is that on Sunday and only on Sunday when all the big boys showed up to jump on the big ways. Us little guys just got left out in the cold, they could of sacrificed an instructor every once in a while to atleast be in charge of organizing and debriefing with us. We just kinda got forgotten. And we certainly didn't get asked to join them on those jumps. I understand that they have to have some fun also, but hey this is our weekend to fly with the big guys and get inputs. Seemed a little clickish at that point. I'll certainly be there next year or when they have another boodie of this type, it was worth my 20 dollars and I learned alot. Good job guys...

Hey Skymonkey-
Now after clicking on your picture, I remember seeing you there. That's some bright colored gear you have! :)I got there late on Saturday, and after talking to Jimmy and a few people, I decided my skills wern't up to par with what was going on and I didn't join in with the "official" dives. But, I'm glad you had a good time. Hope you come back to Deland again!

Skymonkey~~Sorry I missed you. I was there all day/ night on Saturday.
Stacy~~It was very cool to meet you;).
There really weren't that many more people there than usual which was nice, and a lot of people there were regulars that are there all the time. The freefly instructors are great guys and organized a great boogie for people who don't normally get to participate in events such as that.
I did some tracking dives but left the big-ways and 3D jumps to others.
It sounds like you enjoyed yourself, Skymonkey. I hope we get to officially meet you sometime and you decide to come back:)Much love and blue skies,

it was fun meeting you too, esp teh little conversation on the deck. =c)
I must say one of the funniest points of the evening was trying to get the jello shots out of the cups... that took a lot of work!!
flyhi-
when you started falling low you shoulda just grabbed someone's chest strap, 3D-ed it on "purpose"- woulda been interesting to see reactions there!!!! who cares, the other jumps were pretty good, gotta have one notable one....
2nd biggest lesson i learned @ deland- if you use the shower in the womens' room, lock the door. i comment no further on that.

<----Doesn't shower @ the DZ:). Lucky for me my Dad lives on Kepler about five minutes from the DZ. I shower there;).
Stacy~~Which conversation on the deck? The one when I first got there or the one after I came back?:)Skymonkey~~I meant to tell you: If you're interested in trying out some 3D dives or big ways, your best bet would be to come on any other weekend to Skydive Deland. They organize those all the time on the weekends. Make yourself known, fly w/ them a few times on another weekend and next time, I'm sure you'll be able to jump in on some of the big way dives. They have them pretty often on the weekends.
Much love and blue skies,
