Moving to Boston

Recommended Posts

Ok. Waiting to start packing because I am jumping all weekend before the move but I will physically be living in Boston on the 27th of this month. Packing and moving next week!
Anyone here in Massachusetts? Where do you jump? I think Skydive Boston Providence will be the closest DZ to the area!

I live in Western Mass. approximately 2 hours from Boston. Once I finish AFF, my home DZ will be Jumptown in Orange which is approximately 70 miles west of Boston. Getting around New England is really easy since the states are so small. My email is in my profile. I hear good things about Pepperel also.

Okay, here is the straight info about all the Boston DZs....
Skydive New England in Lebanon, Maine:
Is like 90 mnutes to 2 hours north of Boston. PRO: they have a Super Otter, and the night life is the best in New England, really good scenery too under canopy, alot of freeflyers and rw flyers. Great vibe at the DZ too. CON: Landing area can be tight/tricky with a runway intersecting the landing area/not alot of outs. If your smart under canopy, you'll be fine.
Skydive Pepperell:
45 minutes from Boston, PRO: Great staff, (I work there...LOL), we have an Otter, great group of fun jumpers, plenty of room to pack, huge landing area, alot of outs and a pretty decent bonfire on the weekends. Always a good time on the DZ. CON: Most RW fliers than freefliers, although there is some freeflying gong on, but not as much as RW. (Its catching on though....LOL)
Jumptown (Orange, MA)
About 90 minutes/2hours west of Boston. PRO: Another friendly drop zone, everybody helps out new comers, great vibe, good mix of rw and freefliers, I believe they have an Otter there this year, alot of packing areas. CON: The beginner landing area (The Bowl) is about an 1/8 of a mile from manifest/packing area, it's HUGE and its SAFE, but it take a few minutes to get back to pack. The experienced landing area is tighter (next to the buiding) and is a sand/dirt landing area. Another great DZ
Boston Providence:
About 45 minutes to an hour south of Boston. PRO: Great people there, the staff and the fun jumpers are all way cool. I think they jump a Cessna Caravan, plenty of room to land, nice shaded out door area to hang out between loads too. CON: Not as much room for packing as the others, but in their defense they are pressed for space and make the best use of the area.
In conclusion, all 4 DZs are great, you can't pick a bad one, they all have pros and cons, but with all of them, the PROS definitely outway the CONS. You can't go wrong where ever you pick. If your ever at Skydive Pepperell, look me up.
Peace!

Tom

If you like old-time blues (pre WWII) check out the Tarbox Ramblers. They play at the Green Street Grill in Cambridge, I think Friday nights. They also play at the Burren. They are one of my favorite bands..B|

I live in Massachusetts and jump at Jumptown. Tom did a good job describing all the area DZs. My only additional comment is I consider the bowl landing area at Jumptown to be a PRO not a CON. I love it! It's huge and the sand is thick and can be forgiving when you screw up on landing. I've flared too early and too late and thanked my lucky stars for that sand. A van is waiting to give you a ride to the other side of the runway back to manifest and only takes a few extra minutes. If you have a B license or higher and prefer you can land in the smaller landing area next to manifest. Oh, and we do have an otter this year.
Try all 4 Dzs. They're all good. Each have their own personality and different people have different preferences. Welcome to the area!
Muenkel... where are you doing AFF? I'll probably see you when you go to Jumptown as we are out there most weekends. I can't jump until July but my husband will be jumping whenever we can get there. Look for us. His name is Bernie and he has a royal blue jumpsuit with red and black and a red infinity rig. Same with you, Chrome, if you make it out there and I hope you do.

You had a choice between California and Boston and you chose BOSTON? Enjoy the snow and the short skydiving season ... while we're jumping year 'round out here...

SkyBytch / BB...I could not turn down Boston. It is a great position with a lot more $$$ than what I was offered in Boston. Plus I will have weekends off, in CA that was not promised all the time. I will definetly make CA my vacation after living in Florida and jumping at all of theose dz's I just have Arizona and California to go! I can't wait to walk into Square 1 one day and say..."Yes, there is this Bytch I wanna see!"

Hi Donna,
I am going back to where it all began for me, Skydive Space Center in Florida. I'll be there for 2 weeks. But Mass. remains my home and I plan to spend alot of time at Jumptown, so I will definitely introduce myself. Thanks.

Cool! Look forward to seeing you when you get back. My FJC instructor who is an S&T A at Jumptown is from Rowe. He usually has a pig roast at his place Labor Day weekend. Beautiful little town. He's the principal of the little school there. Great guy. Maybe you know him.
See you soon. Good luck with your AFF!

That would be Mr. Bob Clancy. I have not yet met him, but did receive an email from him introducing himself.
Thanks again.

I don't know what you're talking about, Lisa. Boston kicks ass, while California is full of flaky people, forest fires, mudslides, earthquakes, race riots, and the like, none of which we have in Boston. Well, maybe we have some flakes in Cambridge, but that's about it.
Side note - I went to Jumptown for the first time this weekend and got a very good vibe from it. Unfortunately I arrived simultaneously with the rain on Saturday and didn't have the time to go back on Sunday when the weather was nicer. But I met a bunch of people and they were all really cool and I'll definitely be there next weekend if it's decent weather.
What finally got me to drive out there in the first place (though I had been planning to for some time) was doing a little comparison shopping on currency jumps. Even though they only charge about 1/2 of what other New England DZ's do... I didn't realize currency jumps were this expensive everywhere! I better hurry up and get those B and C licenses so I can go a little longer between jumps without getting held up for this crap again. Or maybe go down to Raeford where it sounds like this is the kind of thing an instructor would just do for slot plus beer, right Chuck?

Ok. Blinker fixed. Report finished. Now all I need to do is finish packing and a little laundry and I am on my way. I wonder how long it will take until I have a New England accent? From now on it is skydiving in the summer and snowboarding in the winter. Good seafood like lobster and crabs (good kind of crabs, not vd), I guess all I need now is a winter coat.:)
