Space Tourism- What do you think?

Space Tourist

Is Space Tourism a Good Idea??
Yes
No
Who gives a shit?

So what do you all think? Good idea or bad? At first I thought it was a terrible idea, but really, who does it hurt? If some millionaire wants to throw down a few big ones to go into space at his own risk, more power to them. I know NASA frowns on it, and I think thats the way it should be- astronauts are up there for a reason- and its not to be tourguides. But, like I said, if someone reallly wants to spend that much dough, let 'em.

Good. It will hasten the day when it's cheap to get to orbit, and we really do need to start messing up low earth orbit (and the moon) up instead of the earth. Plus, someday we will need the resources of the solar system to survive. If, by that time, we can get them, then we're in good shape. If, by that time, we still don't have a presence on the moon and mars etc. then that's all she wrote. "Why should we spend money on mythical space resources when we can spend it right here helping people on earth?" will be the call of the day.

Well, there are plenty of military pilots who fly at 35,000 feet, but that doesn't mean that civilians shouldn't fly on airlines.

My thoughts: National Space Agencies should not be in the business of tourism. They should concern themselves with conducting scientific research, and persue the goal of putting humans on Mars. Private corporations can do as they please.

The only way Russia can have a space program, imho, is because it is funded by the ultra rich buying spots on a shuttle launch (which funds the actual shuttle launch). The Russian economy is very bad right now (another reason the oil exploration over there is mucho beneficial to the US...but I am creeping threads here...) and it seems to me to be a great way to keep the Russians in the air.
It's another sign of the growing capitalism in the region, and I personally think it's a good thing - sell what you can, and if you are the only provider of that resource, so much the better.

I think going into space would kick ass. If someone wants to pony up the ticket, and a space agency is offering it, why not?
I don't really see the debate here if the Russians are willing and the people are willing to pay. Just because NASA doesn't like the idea doesn't mean it shouldnt be done.
Someone should come out with the "'re-entry freefly suit"....of course from that altitude spotting would be a bitch...imagine off dz landings--you shoot for Eloy and land in the suburbs of Milwaukee.

I wrote a story about that - it's at http://people.qualcomm.com/billvon/fiction/orbit.html

I agree completely. I think space tourism is inevitable and good but NASA doesn't need to be involved. We need to get to Mars!
