kevin922 0 #1 May 3, 2002 Ok.. so I did something stupid the other day.I was closing my car door and not looking what I was doing, ended up closing my middle finger in the door. Suprisingly enough my reaction was very calm, just opened the door back up and looked at my finger.. then the blood started spewing everywhere. So being the EMT I am I got my trauma kit out of the back and bandaged it, stopped the bleeding and whatnot. It hurts like a mo-fo, but here is my question. The fingernail is split from side to side towards the top of my finger. (I.e. the rest of the nail could probably come off, it's only attached at the sides)What can you do about this? What will happen with growth? Will it push the large piece of nail down which currently exists and then it will just fall off or what?? I really wanna go jumping this weekend but don't want to bleed all over my rig.Any ideas? freeflir29 0 #2 May 3, 2002 Just lop the end of your finger off and I'm sure it will be fine..."It's all about the BOOBIES!"
kmcguffee 0 #3 May 3, 2002 ooooooooooooooooooooooooooouch! I did something like that and I just left it alone. It will eventually just fall off but it will get caught on everthing and hurt like a mofo. Bandage it up good.I'm all in favor of keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of fools. Let's start with typewriters.
AggieDave 6 #4 May 3, 2002 I feel your pain, sort of, remember my post 2 weeks ago about cutting the tip of my finger off? This crap sucks...atleast it's healing *really really* fast.As for the nail, my only experience with that sort of thing has to do with a very badly ingrown toe nail I had a couple years ago. The doctor cut the nail in half and yanked out the bad half. It eventually grew back, although there was a chance that it wouldn't, but it did. There is still a line where the toe nail was cut, my toenail grows like that now, although you can't tell unless you *really* look at it or rub a finger over it and feel it.Something the Dr. told me to do, was to soak the toe in a mineral salt/water solution to help, I have no idea why I was supposed to do that, but I did it.Good luck and go talk to Dr. Bombay, he'll cure it all, atleast for a few hours...A human cannonball, I rise above it allUp higher then a trapeze, I can fly
Zinger 0 #5 May 3, 2002 It is going to hurt for a long time, But believe it or not your lucky it did crack and bleed, If you would of smashed it and it not of cracked the pressure under the nail would build till you went to the doc in much pain and released the pressure by drilling a small hole in the nail (been there and done that. NO FUN).Just keep it wrapped and clean and deal with the pain till the new nail pushes the old out and off, it will take along time and will be ugly even longer. As I type I have a Big toe nail growing in, I smashed it forward into the front of my ski boot when I snagged an edge when snow skiing 5 months ago, It is less then 1/2 way grown in.Sorry to tell ya the bad news and I hope it feels better and heals fast.Blue skies.. coconutmonkey 0 #6 May 3, 2002 Blister under the nail is no joke. Had one after running a half marathon a while back. The mineral water is supposed to help by softening the tissues and such and allowing it to grow forward faster (or something to that effect, I'm not a doctor and don't play one on TV.... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Xpress!) pop 0 #7 May 3, 2002 I was once cutting some fabric with really sharp scissors. I turned my eyes away for a sec, and ended up cutting off a chunk of my finger, including meat....It was pretty f%*#ing gross...For a long time there was a big dent in my finger, but new skin eventually gre over the hole, and you cant even tell there was a cut there......As for your question....go skydive, just put a band aid on it.... ----------"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled, was convincing the world he doesn't exist!" SkydiveMonkey 0 #8 May 3, 2002 I did that a while ago. It took about 3 weeks for the nail to come off cos of all the clotted blood etc underneath it. It's fine though. Looks a bit different but thats about it boobies - the cause of, and solution to, all of lifes problems
rgoper 0 #9 May 3, 2002 Kevin:i'm assuming this is your "deployment" hand? i always wear baseball batting gloves, just in case at deployment time i reach back and get my fingers caught in something, it won't hurt as bad, and won't cause me to "pull my hand back away" from the hackey. i've had nearly every finger on my right hand smashed at some point or another, another reason for the gloves, just a suggestion now mind you, not gospel!
