mouth 0 #76 May 10, 2002 I HATE A CESSNA. I had no choice but to do my Hop and Pop from one. The JM had NEVER exited one so she told me to climb out, check in, go up then down and out. Well, the going up caused the door to come down on my head which pushed me into the step face first, but since I pulled my hands in the step caught my hands and ripped my borrowed NEW altimeter off my arm, which proceeded to velcro to my jumpsuit at the neck and flap in my face, so when I reached up to grab that and shove it in my jumpsuit I wound up head down with no idea how long I had been falling (it seemed like 10 minutes or so!) and no idea of my altitude since my alti was now near my waist inside my suit. Anyway I pulled withing 6 seconds and landed fine. On the debrief I refused flatly to EVER jump that plane again even if it meant I wouldn't get my license. I had to beg people to do night jumps when I was getting my D because they wanted to take the cessna and I refused. One day I may jump one again.....when an army can fit into one to push me out! We only do that to coordinate a group exit so I'm assuming your JM was exiting with you. All of my sport jumps are from a Cessna and I have yet to do this or see it done. I'm all in favor of keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of fools. Let's start with typewriters.
scottbre 0 #78 May 10, 2002 All the Cessna "horror stories" that I have heard have had nothing to do with the plane, and everything to do with the jumper not knowing how to exit the plan properly. If you're not sure about how to do something, ask someone, and even practice it a few times if you think it will help.I haven't been in this sport very long, but it seems to me that if you are in it long enough, you are going to have bad exits from every kind of aircraft. If you steadfastly refuse to jump a plane after you have a bad exit, eventually you won't be jumping from much other that a picnic table. In an argument, you can never prove you're right. The best you can do is prove that they are more wrong.
mouth 0 #79 May 10, 2002 Well....I DID practice it about 15 times and did it just like she told me to do it. I didn't know she was telling me wrong until AFTER I got on the ground and told the DZO I would NEVER do that again. That is when he learned the JM had never done it either! Thankfully since like jump #15 (that jump) I have been lucky enough to be a PLANE BITCH.
Billy 0 #80 May 10, 2002 I'm in the "it's all good bunch"we have a 182 and a turbine 207,, first jump outta the 182 was a night jump,, first time outta an otter I wondered why the door was on the wrong side and totally botched the exit because of that,, but I do love the sound of a turbine firing up! Have yet ta jump a jet,, and will do my first helo jump in Kamloops very soon...
GrumpySmurf 0 #81 May 10, 2002 There's nothing better than being on a C-182 load with a couple of first time IAD students, and having the J/M yell door, and 'WHAM!' - that always scares the crap out of them - the 'snick' 'snick' 'snick' of the Otter door sliding up just doesn't have the same effect
 gemini 0 #82 May 10, 2002 My first tandem jump was out of a Casa. When I went back the next weekend for the 2nd, the JM said "let's walk to the aircraft so I can show you how to exit." I didn't understand why additional exit instructions were necessary since you just stepped off the tail-gate. How hard was that? Then I saw the 182! Gemini... Let go dude! I can't land with you hanging on!...
