Flying camera is the poop!!!

Recommended Posts

I had a blast this weekend playing with my new camera. I had some aiming issues I had to work through but I think I have it now. I just need to get a W/A lens and it'll be all good. It certainly changes the way you fly. I think it actually improved my free flying. I stopped "thinking" about trying to do something and just did it. I was soooo solid on my first ever ball jump I was kinda suprised. I thought I would have at least had a little trouble with fall rate but I was perfect. Just hung out like I had been doin this all my life. Of course....the ball going 260 MPH sure helped me out. Thats a very nice fall rate for me. Very comfortable.
I can forsee me becoming at least a part time tandem vidiot. I had loads of fun filming it. Free jumps and a couple bucks in your pocket doesn't hurt either. :)"Here I come to save the BOOBIES!"

I am surprised that they let you jump with a tandem on the first day of flying your camera

The TM is a good friend with around 2500-3000 jumps that I have jumped with many many times. He knows my skills and is plenty comfortable with me flying with him. I have also been practicing my camera step exits for quite a while now and have gotten really good at it.

How can you be practicing your camera step exits for filming a tandem if you are freeflying all the time? Very different exits off any plane. I learned a new camera exit this weekend and I know it will take me at least 20 jumps to keep the people in frame most the way off the hill. These exits don't work with freefliers at all. There is a big difference between the 2 exits.

Not the way I do them. This TM was doing a couple flips out the door so they drop really fast and of course they penetrate that relative wind a bunch. I come off the step and sort of go into almost a cannonball. Once they pick up speed and start to drop a little I transition to Head Down and drive forward really hard to stay both on level and close. Then belly out when they get stable and toss the drogue. Plus the video looks way cool when you turn HD during the exit. Hardly any difference in that and chasing a flower exit except the flower doesn't belly out and throw a drogue.

How about the Tandem that goes and does a clean presention to the relative wind like TI's are told to by thier TE's? Thats a SLOW tandem that will leave you cupping a long time if you were'nt floating the exit.... you ready for those too?

Narce one my son....Cameras are fun.
I use a 'fat' battery for ground stuff, showing jumps to chums etc, and use a 'slim cell' for actual jumping. It ensures your slim is charged and ready for rocknroll at a moments notice, just get into the habit of swapping em
Ball going at 260 mph and your comfortable??? Assume a typo here :)Cya

Whats hard about that? Either you can keep that slow fall rate or not.....I don't think it takes any exceptional amount of skill to cup air. This is also exactly why you discuss the exit with the TM before you go just like on any other skydive.

Not at all....that seems to be a really nice speed for me. In fact I distinctly remember having to get a little slower once cause I started to get slightly low. :)BTW that was MAX speed on the dive according to a Pro Track. 160???? I pulled a 3 way Hybrid to 167 once......:)"Here I come to save the BOOBIES!"

I don't even know what to say about this . . .
Oh, wait, yeah I do!
Hey Clay, give me a good leading exit of a 4-way team launching a monopod.
(That ought to keep him humble for a few weeks [years].)

> Ball going at 260 mph
was it filled with lead ??? if you don't make any extra efforts
you will get stuck around 240 mph no matter what you do.
it's like a barrier. going faster will require different body position.

Out of curiousity. What was the avg speed for that jump?
If that ball is truly falling anywhere near 260 then it was poorly made. Most freefliers are going to have a very, very hard time staying with it.
The spaceballs that the First School of Whatever Modern Name We Trademarked uses fall around 160 typically. Last summer at SDC's Summerfest they were there giving AD exams and the balls were actually falling closer to the 150 range and a LOT of people went low on them.

with avg speed of 260, max should be in excess of 300 :)
i was just joke about 260 mph space ball. one on the best freefleyers at my dz tried speed diving once. he got 218 mph if i'm not mistaken. at least around that range.
> Most freefliers are going to have a very, very hard time staying with it
no one would be able to have his hand in front of him to grab it at that speed.
Clay, fess up ! :)
btw, i hit 291 last sunday :) still a little shy of 300 :(

correct, it does not take much skill to cup air... now cupping air while keeping your camera on the subject is something totally different.
a slow tandem can be in the 105 mph range (I've seen some slower)... it is not hard to fall 105 mph, but it is hard to fall that speed while looking up at your subject... you can't shoot a tandems face from above, and the "on level" shot is weak at best... it is a whole lot more than falling slow or falling fast. (so is 4-way video for that matter)

It's very easy to underestimate the challenge

Just joking with you Quade. I know a person or two that shoots 4 way professionally and I have an idea of how hard it is. :)As for the speed......I have a Time Out....One of the South Africans mentioned that the top speed showed 260 on his Pro Track. All I know is I was very comfortable with the ball and we had a total of 5 people orbiting and doing transitions. I do know that I had a hell of a lot of speed when I tracked off. Got smacked pretty hard on the opening cause I didn't do ENOUGH to stop my forward speed.
