Armageddon, the movie.

Recommended Posts

OMG... I just watched Armageddon.. First time I watched it since 9/11..
The scenes where the buildings are falling, the people are falling and where the world trade centers were hit by meteors seem ALLOT more real..
Has anyone else seen Armageddon since 9/11??
Is it different to you? DAMN..

Odd, Columbia House sent me Armegeddon (by mistake? I didn't order it, and it wasn't a directors selection I forgot to decline) and it arrived 9/10 with American History X, and Fight Club. I remember 9/10 I watched American History X and held a new found appreciation for tolerance of races etc, then the next morning, BLECH.....
I tried going to classes, but was too stressed out and wanted to keep in touch with all that was going on in our nation. I stopped by a gas station run by middle-easterners on the way home which I frequented quite often and while inside paying commented on how freaky all this stuff was only to get a look that made me feel like I didn't even exist. I was so confused, I had often chatted with these people and thought they were cool people, and all of a sudden they gave me the most uncomfortable feeling I had ever experienced. All this was before any 'guess-tamites' even made that it was a terrorist act or anything.

What was even more eerie to me was the ending of the Tom Clancy book (I forget the name) in which a Japanese terrorist flys a fully-fueled 747 into the capital building, killing most of the leadership of the US.

Hey, Bill.
It starts the book Executive Orders (and it may have ended one, too, but I don't recall that). I just finished that book not two weeks ago, re-reading it with an eye that was decidedly different. The plot deals with an Ebola attack, as well as the plane...

Debt of Honor ends with the plane crash right after Ryan is sworn in as Vice-President. Executive Orders goes over it again so new readers aren't confused.

I really like Clancy books, and for the most part the movies have been good, if not as true to the novels as possible (you can fit a lot of plot in 700 pages). Alec Baldwin made a good Jack Ryan in Hunt for Red October. Harrison Ford was good in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. Now they go ahead and give the part to Ben Affleck in The Sum of All Fears!! I know Ford doesn't bring the teenagers to theater like he used to, but crap! At least give the part to somebody that's old enough to play it.

Thanks, Indyz. It is an interesting plot line. Gets a tad complicated, but since when is real life NOT complicated?
And I agree with you about Ben Affleck...I think they should have stayed with Ford...he's a great actor, and great eye candy for us women...and I don't like Ben - too "hollywood cute"...

Clancy, right on! I read the entire series from start to finish a bit ago, took a few weeks to get them all read (I'll be damned if he ever writes one that's under 300 pages...), and its scary how true to life his writings sometimes becomes.
Another auther that has an interesting take on terrorism is Richard Marchinko. I wouldn't read all of his books (the last few have royally sucked), but the first 3, especially the second and third one, deal quite a bit with terrorism and the such. These, having been written 10 years ago, leaves me with a I told you so feeling, since authors like Marchinko and Clancy have been warning readers about terrorist attacks that were sure to come.
Yeah, Afflack (aflac!:D) is a disappointment as Jack Ryan...

I was really into the Marcinko books when I was in middle school and early high school (7 years ago-ish). Right after the blue one came out I tried to get my mom to take me to the book store so I could buy one. She needed to do something that seemed totally unimportant to me, so we went the next day. It turns out he had been there signing books on the day that I wanted to go! I got my autographed copy anyway.
But yeah, other than being completely over the top the first few were pretty good.

They are definately over the top, but I still thought that he had some interesting takes on terrorism in general, that I hadn't really thought about when I first read the books (like you, I read them about 8 years ago).

I'm reading the Sum of All Fears now, and why oh why do they choose that for a movie? It's not nearly as good as some of the other ones...like why not Without Remorse or Rainbow Six?
Personally, I think Alec Baldwin was a better Jack Ryan than Harrison Ford.
Does anyone know the chronological story order of Clancy's books? I have read several in the last few months but have been having to piece the timeline together in a really disjointed way since i havent been reading them in teh order that tehy happen according to the stories.

Yeah, here's the list in order:
The Hunt for Red October
Red Storm Rising
Patriot Games
The Cardinal of the Kremlin
Clear and Present Danger
The Sum of All Fears
Without Remorese
Debt of Honor
Executive Orderes
Rainbow Six
The Bear and the Dragon
All of those are execellent books, once school is out I think I'm going to read them again, actually.

Rainbow Six
The Bear and the Dragon
From what I've read so far, most of that list seems to fit right except for one thing I noticed.
Without Remorse has to be one of the first ones cuz it's about John Clark before he was John Clark...happening during the vietnam war.

Nope, that is the correct order, Without Remorse is during Vietnam and it is about Clark before he was John Clark, but it was written later in the series, after we had been introduced to him and his talents. Clancy did that semi on purpose, since he didn't want the cat out of the bag so to speak, about John Clark and sense he hadn't really thought about writting that until fans had requested that he did. :)A human cannonball, I rise above it all

For the books centered around Jack Ryan the publishing order is actually somewhat different from the timeline order. Check it out here (google cache since the site died). It also mentions "irreconcilable differences in the time line that even Clancy has spoken about" (shit happens when you written umpteen thousand pages of books).

OK, cool...yeah i was referring to storyline order, not publishing. Interesting to know that he wrote more about Clark after fans requested it...i think him and Ding are the best characters mainly cuz the covert ops stuff is more fun than the politics side IMO.

Yeah, but the intracacies behind the plot surrounding the politics is really fun too. :)Sorry, I thought you meant publish time line...*shrug*
Too bad SNL ruined it for me, everytime I watch the HFRO movie I see Connery saying "Tell me about the Penis Mightier, Trebec..."

And here we have the movie timeline, which is different from both the publishing timeline and the storyline order. This is getting confusing. It also mentions how Cardinal of the Kremlin was supposed to be the next movie after Clear and Present, and how it was potentially going to star (jesus fucking christ) Keanu Reeves. You can tell how old the site is.

Keanu Reeves

Whoa. I know Kung-Fu...
The Matrix was the last movie that he was able to do well, but then again, that movie required that lost clueless acting that he is able to do (that's all he's able to do)!
I couldn't imagine him ruining a good Clancy story, then again, I never imagined Affleck (Aflac!) being apart of a Clancy either...

I believe the order of his fiction series is:
The Hunt for Red October
Red Storm Rising
Patriot Games
The Cardinal of the Kremlin
Clear and Present Danger
The Sum of All Fears
Without Remorse
Debt of Honor
Executive Orders
Rainbow Six
The Bear and the Dragon
I've read `em all except The Cardinal . . . the man writes a hell of a yarn (I'm out-of-commission for several days until I finish one of his books). Personally, I think Patriot Games and Rainbow Six were kinda weak.
The man has good sources. Too bad he doesn't moralize.

BTW, "Armegeddon" unfortunately stole the thunder from the nearly sumultaneously released, "Deep Impact". Same premise, but with a more believable delivery. A truly GREAT movie: believable plot, characters you can really give a crap about, great cinematography, sublime special effects--and no Bruce Willis!! Check it out.

i dunno, the movie doesn't seem that much different overall but the initial meteor scenes do make you gasp a bit more.
ok, i gotta come out of the closet on this one...i really do like this movie! i know that everything about the movie is crap, but for some reason i will always watch it if it is on and don't delay to put it in the dvd player whatsoever! :)i don't know, there is just something about the movie. the story is sap, but it is so good! it's a total tear-jerker, the characters actually do have some funny sayings, and the special effects are pretty to fun to watch even when they look entirely fake.
come on, there has got to be some other people out there who realize that armegeddon is the best of the crappiest movies out there! it makes me smile every time i see it.
